I have a 1993 GMC Sierra SL PU that shifts hard from 1st to 2nd 80% of the time. It does this whether hot or cold. I would appreciate any suggestions on what the problem could be, thanks.

First thing to mind is shift solenoids or valve body concers.

I had the tranny replaced about 5 years ago and was told by the shop that the ecm was causing it. Was I being BSed.

’93 still has a manual Throttle Valve cable attached to the throttle body. Make sure Throttle Valve cable “works freely” from the throttle body to the throttle pressure valve in the transmission. Also check the adjustment.

Well if they told you the ecm was causing the issue and put a tranny in it I’d say you got screwed. 5 years is a bit of time. I’ve put transmissions in 5-10k mile vehicles plenty of times in dealer ships. I honestly think you would have some sort of fault within the transmission as stated previosuly. It’s not something you want to tear into unless you have the skill set.

I’d first start by checking the fluid level and condition. If the trans was rebuilt as you say then perhaps there was something with the rebuild. It would be impossible to say without checking the pressures though. You’d also want to check for codes that might be stored for the problem. You need to gather some evidence before you can call BS on the computer being the problem. More info on transmission problems here.
