1993 accord 2.2, picked it up for my daughter last week,,,,I have cleaned and adjusted the IACV, FITV and TB (replaced the gasket as well),the EGR plugs are new and seem to have been removed and replaced, I assume that the ports were cleaned. I also have checked for vacuum leaks as per EricTheCarGuy w/carb cleaner over every vac source including the intake. Topped off and burped the cooling system, unplugged the IACV while running and the idle drops but surges quickly only rising 100-200 rpm.

I am a little lost at this time and would appreciate any suggestions, I know my way around most cars (had a shop years ago)but Honda is one I am not that familiar with.

No I did not because I read in a few places not to touch it, but I will watch the vid and adjust it.

        Thanks

I would also look up Eric’s idle Speech as that has allot of good info for Honda idle issues.

Still have the surging idle after cleaning TB, IACV, FIV, EGR ports and the EGR, someone said to pinch off the TB vac line and see if it dies, I pinched off the TB vac line and it did die. Is that important? I decided to order another IACV (off eBay, cheap) and it should be here in a couple of days, I hope it works. I cant find any vac leaks, sprayed C Cleaner everywhere with no change.

Did you look at the PCV valve (i think it has one?) as well as looking up Eric’s idle speech?

Yes, it is new as well as the hose. I watched Eric’s speech and tried all that was recommended with no success. It dies when I pinch off the vac line on the TB, I am still waiting to find out if that means anything.

Try pinching off the PCV line as suggested.;)

I pinched off all lines w/no affect, except the TB line and it died. I think that was the MAP sensor line.

I’m glad to hear you checked for air in the cooling system as this is the most common cause of an idle issue on Honda’s. I don’t see anywhere where you checked for vacuum leaks, this would be step 2 in the process. If you don’t have any vacuum leaks then check the IAC which you seem to have done. I don’t know if replacing it is going to help you but I can’t see how it would hurt. After that I check the operation of the PCV by pinching off the supply line to it which you have also done so we can take that off the list. BTW Honda’s don’t like aftermarket PCV valves, in fact most times you’re better off with a used OE than a new aftermarket part. I’ve actually seen them cause idle problems in some cases. I’ll just say straight out it’s not likely to have anything to do with the TPS. The only time I’ve seen Honda TPS’s go bad is when they were physically damaged. One thing I do see from time to time that’s throttle related is someone adjusting the throttle cable too tight. A quick check for this is to simply try holding the throttle closed at the linkage at the throttle body. If the idle calms down when you do this then perhaps the throttle is not closing fully which can cause an idle issue. EGR will not effect idle unless it’s stuck open. Many people go here but to be honest it’s hardly ever a problem and when it is it causes a miss under load NOT an idle issue. The FITV is the LAST thing to check actually but you did do the most important part which is back it off 1/4 turn after you bottom it out. Lastly don’t adjust the idle screw. This often gets done and can actually mask the fix when you finally do fix it. If it looks like someone has messed with that perform the idle relearn procedure which you should be able to find using the search function on this site.

That should get you started anyway.

Thank you, I was not aware of the PVC issue, I will check it. The AICV fixed it after replacing, but now the idle is a bit too low so I will get a OEM PVC and see if that helps. I have been talking w/ The College Guy (PM)and going through the other steps of which he has been of invaluable help ((thumbs up to him). He is a quality guy that knows his stuff!! Your site has saved me a bundle and thanks to guys like you and others, us less knowledgeable can fix our own cars in this already hard to deal with economy instead of giving up our hard earned cash to the dealer/shops.

                          Thank you Eric! 🙂
