My mom’s lumina has been acting up lately. After sitting for a few hours it won’t start, won’t turn over, or make any noise at all. I was thinking maybe the starter, battery, or alternator. Both alternator and battery are fine. Once started a couple of the dash gauges don’t work. Thinking this may have something to do with it? I checked all the fuses and they look fine. I would try a test light to see if there is any drains from the battery but I don’t own one. Any ideas?

also when started all other electrical things work fine. My step dad did tell me that the lights on the rear view mirror wouldn’t shut off so he ripped it off the windshield while lights were still on. Wondering if this could have something to do with it?

First- if you haven’t done so yet have the battery tested ( if you don’t have the equipment to do it any good auto parts store can charge and then load test it for you )
Question- will the car start on this battery with a jump from another vehicle ?

You mentioned the mirror lights would not turn off so the mirror was ” torn ” off the windshield – if this circuit is staying “hot” all the time( even with the mirror now removed) it will probably drain the battery. you should check this circuit out and turn off the power to it.

When you try to turn thr key and its ‘completely dead’ with no noise at all, thats usually an indication of a battery issue. I would look at your connections too and be checking for excessive corriosn on the terminals that can cause no starts.

+1 on having the battery load tested.

What you describe actually sounds like a classic loose connection, GM decided it was a good idea to make those side terminal batteries that were not suppose to corrode, instead they get VERY corroded and are often crossthreaded causing poor connections. I’d be checking your battery connections if you know the battery is good.

Hey Eric , what I gathered from d1poppe’s first post was that the car would start but after sitting for some time it would not crank , no lights nothing. my thought was that something was draining the battery. in his second post he mentioned that the rear view mirror lights would not turn off ( I suppose that those lights being on all the time would be enough to drain the battery when the car was parked ) he also mentioned that his step father ” tore ” the rear view mirror off the windshield while the lights were still on. I was thinking that this could leave a short that could drain the battery.

I’m not sure if it would drain the battery dead in that short amount of time and if it did the battery itself might be suspect. In addition many times when you remove something it’s like turning off a switch so I don’t think that is the case. I still recommend checking the connections at the battery and checking the battery itself.
