so i popped my hood and replaced my battery because my car would not start. My car has been making some loud clanking noises. Not coming from inside the engine. My power steering pump and my alternator pulleys are not spinning. What can cause this. Have both really failed. The power steering pump did have a leak and it ran dry.

Okay, a few questions so people can help you out a bit quicker.

        1) When does the sound happen? While engine is running, when it is trying to start?
        2) how is the engine oil level?
        3) Power steering fluid level? (You did refill it with proper fluid, yes?)

Also; what do you mean they are not spinning? Is the belt gone or super loose? Did the crank pulley come off somehow?

oil level is fine. The power steering pump is leaking from the metal line that runs to it. It leaked all over the belts. Also the pvc valve was leaking out oil badly and got all over the belts as well.
When i get to about 3000 rpm,the rattling clanking sound goes away. It fan be heard at idle speed all the way up to about 3000 rpm then it stops.
The belts are loose to. I tried adjusting the tension and it worked but the belts stopped spinning again 2 minutes later. The noise seems to be coming from my power steering pump.
The power steering is full but is leaking and the oil levels are on point. The car has not lost its power. The engine itself is running fine from what i can tell.
The sound starts up when the engine turns over and is running. I cant hear the sound while the car is cranking.

IS it possible that the oil leak i had and the power steering pump leak that leaked all over the belts and caused them to stretch out to where they do not stay tight anymore?

Yes. It is possible. If the belts got oil and crap all over them they need to be changed after the power steering leak is fixed.
So the rattling noise happens when the belts are not moving anything? It could be a loose crank pulley.
If the belts are so loose they aren’t moving the alternator, I’m guessing they aren’t moving the water pump either.
The rattling noise needs to be identified. Use either a long screw driver or mechanic’s stethoscope to figure out where the noise is coming from.
Check your coolant level. The noise could be the water pump too.

i just noticed that the crank pulley bolt is spinning but not the pulley,

Yeah….that’s not supposed to do that…LOL. Try tightening that. Hopefully it’s not too damaged. You need to fix that power steering leak and replace the belts. Let us know what you get.

i will let yall know. if i try tightening it and it doesn’t do anything then what would the worst case scenario be. I do have a replacement pulley that a friend gave me from one of his many cb7s he owns that he keeps around for spare parts for his own. Would it be a good idea to replace the pulley? I returned the belts to auto zone in exchange for new ones, i just have to wait on buying the pump. Do not have the money at the moment. Should i just go to the salvage yard to get one, or will it just fail like this one cause its old to.

If you have a good pulley just put it on. The old one probably got all marred up. Worst case scenario could be anything. It’s hard to tell, but the brunt of the damage was probably caused to the pulley.
You can get a pump from the junker, but there’s no way to tell how long it will last. Before replacing the pump, make sure that it’s actually the pump leaking. It could be the pressure line is leaking or just loose.

The crank pulley is probably a damper, meaning it has a rubber piece that joins the rim of the pulley to its hub. If the rubber breaks you need a new pulley. With the belts off (and the engine not running) turn each of the accessories by hand that are driven by the accessory belts (this may include the following: the A/C pulley, the water pump pulley, the power steering pump pulley and the alternator pulley). Do they turn freely and smoothly? If so all is good there except you need to fix the leak. New belts need to be kept free of oil.

ok. I am still waiting on the on the proper tools to get the bolt off the pulley. I have a question, a friend of mine came by and tried to help me brake the bolt loose and by accident he turned the engine bolt clockwise, but not by much, like maybe a inch or 2. Maybe less. The engine is only supposed to turn counter clockwise which it still does so i know the internals are OK but did that throw my timing off? Will i have to make sure the engine is in cylinder 1 when i start the engine?
