      Hello

i have a 1992 ford tempo with a 2.3l it seems to me the idle is high cause if i let my foot off the brake car will start moving ( yes i know slow moving is normal) but this seems fast. I have check for vacuum leaks i haven’t found any. and i don’t have a scan tools for this type of older car so iam not sure where else to look any ideas? ohhh one more thing is i hear a humming noise when the car is not running and in park could this me the fuel pump iam hearing? if so that seems kinda of loud. anyways and tips or ideas what to check for my high idle?

      thanks

Try tapping on the IAC with the handle of a screw driver to see if the idle comes downC8-)

Ya…sounds like the idle air control valve….the inside discs are made of plastic…i have replaced my brothers on his tbird like 3 times.

if you believe the fuel pump is making excessive noise, you can check the amps going to the pump and compare those to factory readings.

The IAC will be near the throttle body. if banging on it does not change the idle. You can take it out and clean it with carb spray.
reinstall it and see if the idle has changedC8-) look for the piece in the picture

Also, if the pump is really noisy maybe it’s working extra hard to push fuel through a partially clogged filter? That’s another good reason to check amp draw on it.

Another thing to consider is this is a 20 year old car. I remember owning a new ’89 GM product where I could clearly hear the pump whine while standing next to the driver’s door – those things were a lot louder than what we have today.

Idle problems are often mixture problems so I would also suggest checking the IAC valve because as suggested they were something of an issue on that vintage if I remember right. You might also check to see if your throttle is closing all the way either due to a sticking throttle cable or carbon buildup inside the throttle body as this can also cause an idle problem. DON’T remove the throttle body to clean it, this may cause other problems.
