1992 ford tempo 2.3L with AC

well today it was warm enough to work on it for a little bit i hear a clanking noise when the car is at idle when i give it gas the noise goes away if i turn on the AC the noise is still there however if i remove the drive belt the noise to gone. it sounds like the noise is coming from the top of the engine

I replaced the idler pulley and the pulley on the tensioner arm did not replace the whole arm just the pulley

so iam thinking its the harmonic balancer however it don’t make the noise when the belt is off so maybe it wont cause there is no load????

I know there is an bulletin about this issue

      any help would be great

      thanks

yes it is a BAD harmonic balancer the rubber is cracked AND was the bolt was remove it came apart in 3 pieces!!! which as y’all know it shouldn’t do that!

I have a new one and the timing cover seal on order i figure might as well replaced that sense i have it apart!!!

so hopefully it will go back together ok!!!! lol

^It could be that the strain on the system from the bad harmonic balancer inhibited the AC compressor pulley from spinning freely.

Use an impact or wedge something in the ring gear teeth to keep the crank from rotating.

                    hello

eric i thought about that BUT impact would over torque the bolt and break it don’t you think? the book calls for it to be torque to 94 – 120 ftlbs

also the squeaking noise was the belt to just to let everyone know

You can turn the impact ‘down’ if that makes sense. Both my 3/8’s and 1/2″ impacts are adjustable. That would at least allow you get the pulley seated. Then you can pull the starter and use something to wedge the teeth of the flywheel (like a prybar and a friend) while you use your torque wrench to set it if you are concerned about over torquing. However, if you don’t let the impact ‘hammer’ on the bolt for awhile after the bolt it locked down, you should be fine.

beefy – my one impact i cant turn down 🙁 my other one i can however i dont know what it would be turn down meaning how many ft-lbs..

ohhh ok on the green light i didnt know that!!! sorry about that

I have yet to break a crank bolt by impacting it on and I’ve done that to every one that I’ve ever done. Of course don’t sit there for 5 min with the trigger pulled, once it bottoms out you’re done.
