1992 ford tempo 2.3L with AC

well today it was warm enough to work on it for a little bit i hear a clanking noise when the car is at idle when i give it gas the noise goes away if i turn on the AC the noise is still there however if i remove the drive belt the noise to gone. it sounds like the noise is coming from the top of the engine

I replaced the idler pulley and the pulley on the tensioner arm did not replace the whole arm just the pulley

so iam thinking its the harmonic balancer however it don’t make the noise when the belt is off so maybe it wont cause there is no load????

I know there is an bulletin about this issue

      any help would be great

      thanks

        Can you post a video?

I doubt the harmonic balancer is the issue. Did you try to rotate the water pump pulley by hand as well as seeing if there is any play?

I can try to make a video as for the water pump i did check it…it seems find however its hard to get in there

if it was the balancer it should make nosie with the belt off right???

Did you check your power steering fluid?

You could raise the vehicle and have someone move the steering wheel lock to lock so you can see if you can pin point the noise.

I just diagnosed a faulty power steering pump on a VW while having someone rotate the steering wheel lock to lock. I used a very long screw driver using the metal tip pressed against the power steering pump and the other end against my ear.

Use CAUTION if you use this method. It’s also easier if you use a mechanics stethoscope.

and the thing is i don’t have to push down on the gas very much to have the noise stop also if it was the balancer wouldn’t it still make the noise when the belt is off???

                  thanks

Yes, you would still hear the noise if the harmonic balancer was making the noise and the belt was off. Harmonic balancers however do not usually cause noises, they cause vibrations. I know you said when you used a stethoscope, you heard the noise everywhere. That’s common. But when you get the stethoscope on the actual failing part, you should notice the difference. I would recheck it, and as Dreamer noted, be careful where you put your hands/tools on a running engine with moving pulleys/belts etc.

Didn’t you already have this car on another thread for the same issue? I thought I remembered discussing harmonic balancers and noise vs. vibration on this same car. Just curious. If you did re-post, please in the future continue on the same thread if it’s the same issue, so we can all keep up with the happenings and the what-nots.

beefy – that is what i thought if the belt is off i should still here the noise ya its not a vibration its a noise its weird

i hope the weather gets better so i can look at it again….. iam pulling my hair out on this!!!!! lol

as for the other thread yes i did sorry about that i couldn’t find the thread so i started a new one 🙁 but i will do what what u say in the future

on a side note i did find some info

                      http://autoforums.carjunky.com/Automotive_Repair_C1/General_Discussions_F5/92_Ford_Tempo_GL_knocking_noise_within_belt_system_P73957/

iam thinking iam going to have to pull the pulley off so i can look at the harmonic balancer or maybe a mirror not much room there thats for sure!!!!

if the noise goes away when the belt is off. Then it sounds like something in the drive system. Inspect the balancer for any cracks
or broken parts. does the cooling fan turn with the engine or is it electric? I’m with dreamer can you post a video with the belt on and
                        one with it off. C8-)

can you inspect it from the bottom of the car? or use a small mirror. C8-)

Before you pull the pulley off perhaps check the AC compressor, I’m not sold on the problem being the balancer if the noise goes away when you remove the AC belt, that would normally indicate a problem with the AC compressor or clutch. I also like the idea of checking the rubber insert with a mirror to check for damage before removal.
