Hi Yall back again with a newer nicer ride this time

Got a 1992 Ford F150 Ex-Cab 4×4 with the 5.0L mounted to the E40D transmission. When I first got the truck it had an issue where it wouldn’t go into overdrive at all and there was no “kick-down” under WOT it also had erratic acceleration/shifting unless I shifted manually. I traced the problem to a blown fuse that provided power to some of the transmission controls. This is just to give yall some history on the truck

The other 2 problems are the brake pedal sometimes goes almost all the way to the floor before the brakes become effective. This isnt all the time tho, theres times where the pedal feels normal but I usually get this feeling for one or two brake applications before it sinks down again. Also sometimes if the pedal has a normal feel and i keep pressure on the pedal it starts to sink after a few seconds. The emergency/parking brake works great, and I replaced the front pads at first I thought they were low due to squeking but it turns out they were cracked. After doing this tho the pedal issue hasnt gone away. The truck does have ABS to the rear brakes. To me I feel I need to bleed the brakes but my question is with an ABS system to the rear do I need to bleed the system too or can I just use normal bleed procedures?

My 2nd issue is occasionally when accelerating the truck acts like it either has a miss or the transmission cant decide what gear it wants. Ive changed the oil on the truck and ran lucas injector cleaner a couple of times and the issue has lessened but is still there from time to time. Mostly when accelerating up hill in the 30 mph range or the 45 – 55mph range. To me its not a very serious issue but it is an annoyance, the truck still accelerates and drives just fine and the problem itself is intermittent. Any advice? The truck has about 183000 miles. The owner I bought it from said it had a reman motor put in at around 176000 miles. No paperwork to verify tho but the motor looks and acts like its newer.

For the spongy brake pedal, if you apply the brakes at a stop, does the truck eventually start to creep forward slowly even with pedal still depressed?

I would also again be checking for leaks, (check for dampness near the brake booster as well as behind the booster in the cab and brake booster vacuum hose) air in the system as well as making sure the rear drum brakes are adjusted correctly and that nothing back there is sticking.

You should be fine bleeding the system without a scan tool also.

For your second problem, does that trans have a kick down cable and/or vacuum modulator? How does the transmission fluid look?

I would also suggest Eric’s performance video series –

I second the leak check. That vintage F150 has aloooot of issues with the brake lines rotting out along the frame rail. How does the brake master look? Is the fluid all black and murky?

Hi dreamer, occasionally it does creep forward not all the time tho. Theres no kick down or vacum modulator as Ive looked appearently the tranny is all electronic. It does have over drive and kicks down down just fine now

If it is creeping forward while at a stop sign, that is usually a sign of a master cylinder failure as fluid is leaking past the pistons.

Let us know what you find out 🙂

Black20 my apologies for not answering your question sooner but the fluid seems to look dirty like a dark brown.

An update for everyone the engine miss issue seems to be going away with time. Its a smaller intermittent issue lately. Im wondering myself if it came from just sitting for so long. Ive ran lucas fuel injector cleaner through it and it seems to be doing better.

On the brake issue the last few days I drove the truck Id get a decent if not slightly stiff pedal for a few brake applications then it would get soft and go almost to the floor. If say I have a good pedal feel and i stop the truck and keep pressure on the pedal the pedal eventually sinks and every so often the truck will want to creep forward it doesnt do it everytime tho.

try changing the brake fluid.check to see that your rear drums
                    are adjusted correctly.

Hey Y’all just got back in from working on bleeding the brakes. After I got that done I took it on a test drive. At first the pedal feel was great. But during the drive the pedal feel slowly but surely returned to what it was before although I feel like I do have more stopping power.

So Im thinking either theres a combo valve that I cant find that I need to reset while bleeding the brakes or indeed the master cylinder is failing.

Honestly your brake problem sounds like a master cylinder issue especially since it’s intermittent. If it was a problem with the brake adjustment or a leak it would be like that all the time. I don’t think changing the fluid really did anything.

As for the performance problem it’s often the ignition system that’s at fault with a miss under load, you might start by checking for voltage leaks. These videos might help.

hey everyone well this morning i went to autozone and got a reman master cylinder. It works. The brakes are acting completely normal now. Thanks everyone
