Hello, I’d like to start this post with a huge thank you to Eric the car guy and everyone else who helps the common man fix stuff right(and cheep:whistle: ) on his own.

1992 Automatic Acura Integra with 135k miles.
Anyways, now that its cold outside my key wont come out, or turn the car completely off, for 1-10 minutes after park and turn the engine off. I would just leave the key in but the car is still partially on until key is removed (Stereo/lights still on), and I don’t need it dieing on me.
Someone said something about a slider box under my shifter, but I don’t know where to start.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and possibly helping me out!

I knew it was an automatic before you mentioned it. This is a common problem on that car and it’s the adjustment of the PRNDL switch in the console. Remove the console cover and you can access the switch from the passenger side. It is held in place with 2 10mm nuts. You can loosen the nuts to move the switch back and forth. I often remove the switch and spray the contacts with contact cleaner to make an extra special repair. Make sure you get the pin that sticks out of the shifter back in the slot of the switch when you reinstall it. When you make the adjustment turn the key to the ON position and observe the gear indicator on the dash, you want to make sure that the light for ‘P’ is lit up solid before you tighten the switch down. This is the cause of the problem actually, the switch does not register that it’s in park and therefore the interlock kicks in and won’t let you take the key out. Many times you can just push the shifter forward a little and you’ll be able to get the key out. You can do this till you are able to fix it BTW.

You were right. After pulling everything apart, and getting to the box, I knew forsure that it was the problem. I pulled it out and cleaned dog hair off from my previous owner. I re-greased the underside of the box, but It still does not work properly. You recommend spraying it with contact cleaner? where can I get that?
If this is a common problem you should make a video for it =P

If I had a car to do a video for this with I would. I don’t have my Integra anymore. That said it may be your adjustment. It’s really critical you get that right. You can get contact cleaner at your auto parts store. I use some in this video and there are several comments about what type I should use int the comments BTW.

                Thanks
I will be opening it all back up today. I’ll buy some contact cleaner spray and dielectric grease and let you know how it goes.
