We just picked up this little Accord, figuring it’d be a good economy grocery getter as my daughter approaches 16yo.

      185k. Auto trans.

One owner car before us, we’ve had it a week.
Paperwork and prior owner state that the timing belt/water pump was done at 179k (three years ago) and earlier this year it got a new alternator and battery.

Her is our problem. Runs like a champ for about 20-30 minutes. Then dies. On the side of the road dies. Then it’s a crank-no start for the next few hours as it cools off. One tow, and one ‘just leave it’ later, and I’m pissed.

So far, I’ve changed the cap and rotor (the old ones looked like shit), and I did buy a new main relay. I was going to repair the pictured one, but figured I’d replace and then fix this one for a spare.

When I had it home, before replacing the main relay, I let it idle for 30 minutes, turned it off, and then it wouldn’t restart. At that point, I was still getting spark off the coil, which is why I started looking at the main relay to begin with. After replacing the main relay, I let it idle for 30 minutes, then it’s start and restart multiple times. But, on the road, it only lasted 20 minutes.

But, even after all that, it did it again. It’s sitting at the grocery store now.

It’s also not throwing any codes. Any hints? I didn’t think it was a ICM because I was getting spark on the coil while in the driveway, but stranger things…. And I didn’t have any tools with me tonight at the grocery store.

          Well, just drove it home.
Like before, a 20 minute trip, and it was fine. Pull into the drive, and now it won’t restart.

Looking for spark off the coil, and it’s intermittent. During a crank cycle, I’ll get sparks for half a second, then they quit. After five seconds, I’ll get a few more. Seems like I’m getting consistent pulse from the igniter, so I’m leaning towards a coil going bad.

          Am I missing something?

Coil testing can be done with a multi meter for resistance. I forget the values but they are on the web. Particularly on the honda tech forum. If the coulis out of spec I’d replace it. I would also check the ecu for failing capacitors. If they leak or are starting to leak you might have to eventually replace them or worse the ecu
