Trying to help out a buddy here. Its his kids 91 integra hatch that was seen better days. Cranks and no start. It will intermittently start but will die with any throttle. Has spark, has fuel pressure, 180psi compression on all cyls, cam timing is good. When cranking it sounds like its backfiring through the exhaust but its hard to tell because it has several exhaust leaks at the header.

I chased my tail last night looking into the distributors ckp/cyp/tdc wiring thinking those should have at least a reference voltage but everything i have found online shows those as signal wires only.

Plugs were very black and fuel soaked so we cleaned them up and still no go. Distributor cap and rotor look newer.

Tried running it on propane just to see if it would fire but no dice.

Tried jumping ect sensor just incase it was commanding a full rich and flooding it out

Swapped main relay for grins and no change

      No current dtc’s

      Any ideas?

If the plugs are fuel soaked.sounds like they are not lighting.

The popping noise when trying to start is a backfire in the exhaust system. We dropped the a pipe from the header pipe and blue flame shoots out when starting. Tried advancing the distributor all the way and still no go. Hooked up a timing light to the #1 spark plug wire and we get no pulse when trying to start. I verified a good strong spark at the plug. Any other ideas?

what about vacuum? or did the kid put in fuel he was not supposed to? like diesel?

It’s probably a good idea to check the mechanical timing. If the timing is off it can exhibit all the symptoms you describe. Since you have spark and fuel this is the next logical place to check. Just remove the valve cover and check the timing marks. Keep us posted.

I pulled the valve cover and rechecked the cam timing, its spot on.

The ecu got wet from a water leak so he swapped it out with an ebay special, still no start and now shows a code for the barometric sensor. Not sure if the ecu is garbage or not.

Next step will be pulling a fuel sample to see if its contaminated

the fix was a distributor. My guess is that the ckp/cyp sensor had failed and was signalling for spark at the wrong time.
