I recently purchased a 1991 Accord with 162,651 miles on it with some weird acceleration issues. Sometimes as soon as I start the car and put it in gear, the RPMs begin to raise and stay that way, or start going up and down, or can just happen right when I start the car. Idle is very rough and shakes the car considerably. I read the CEL code and it says its Code 7 which is the TPS. Could the sensor actually be bad?

TPS’s don’t often go bad on Hondas. That doesn’t stop people from replacing them with aftermarket crap ones, or trying to adjust them when they shouldn’t. You might start by checking the throttle cable tension. If it’s too tight, it can hold the throttle open and cause issues. Also, use the articles College man posted above. I’ve written extensively about Honda idle issues. There may be something there that can help.

Tomorrow I’ll be taking a look at this, but thought id post a video showing the issues, also forgot to mention sometimes when I start the car the car stalls outright cause the RPM’s go way too low (from 1000 to 200).

Note: That air intake I’m taking off tomorrow and replacing it with the stock airbox, so if that ends up fixing it that be a plus.

Well 1 out of 2 issues fixed, least I can drive it without a darn stall every stop light!

The reason the idle was so rough to the point of being a massager and stalling out was Cylinder #3 had absolutely ZERO compression (all the valves in Cyl #3 were bent) which made since cause the previous owner botched the timing belt, so it needed a valve job which i ended up doing.

Still has the hunting idle but I’m thinking that it might be the FITV so gonna check that first.

The FITV is NOT the first place to go when dealing with an idle issue like that. Put that toward the bottom of your list. Extensive explanations on how to solve Honda idle issues can be found here.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Still haven’t checked on the idle issue yet as i been busy, I’m a bit more worried about the following issues and it took me forever to capture it on a video.

I get a very loud whining noise at times while moving, mostly when turning the steering wheel ever so slightly.

Here’s a video of the sound:

Also when turning left I have a thumping sound, more like “thump…..thump…………thump”. Checked struts and all seem fine, pushed on the left and right front and comes back up like it should. Could this be the CV Axle? The boots look fine, havent checked to see if it had play yet as I don’t have a jack to lift the car up.

Thought I would update this post to let everyone know, ended up selling the car to a friend, just way too many problems then what the thing is worth, and being I was able to buy a 95 Accord in way better shape just didn’t see the need to shell more money into something that already cost me $1500 in repairs and don’t like lol. Least i got it for free!

The new owner fixed the hunting idle but sadly I have no idea how. Least it has a better home now then it would have with me.

Well that’s one way to solve it. Too bad he didn’t tell you how the hunting idle got solved. Thanks for the updates and for using the ETCG forum.
