Hi i am travelling trough the us in now a 1991 Ford Tempo since my previous car broke down beyond economical repair it is leaking a little bit of trans fluid.

      About the car:
      Make/ model: Ford Tempo GL
      Year: 1991
      Engine: 2,3HSC
      Transmission: 3speed auto FWD
Miles: 97XXX (or more since odo goes to 99999)

      Description of problem:
i notice anything from a couple of drops to a small puddle of ATF under the car by where the front left driveshaft connects to the transaxle, it seems to leak only just as i park the car as it is no fresh fluid on the ground when the car has been parked overnight. it does not seem to be leaking when i am driving as the level barely drops, i drove 100 miles today and the level was pretty much the same but i do see a little bit of ATF under the car every time i park, i have not checked if it is leaking in park idling i will try to check that the next time i park the car but i do believe it comes just as i stop the engine. I have not noticed anything strange with the transmission (other than fords poor choice of not having an overdrive) the puddles are ranging in size of two thumbsized drops to the biggest puddle of about 2-3 inch diameter. I am of course checking the fluid regularly and have barely needed a refill in a total of about 400 miles of driving except for when i first got the car.

I want to know what you think it is my suspiscion is the torque converter is leaking when it stops rotating and that is why there seems to be a varying amount. And do you think it is worth doing anything with considering it is a car i only traded my Mustang for in wich my only other bid was 300$ and this guy had the Tempo for sale for 800$ and i am leaving the us when my trip is finished in about 1,5 months.
      Thank You in advance.

My first thought is a plugged or restricted transmission breather. Someone could have also overfilled the transmission.

That 3 speed transmission is a good transmission, the ATX.There is one thing you don’t when you take the axles out these, take both axles out of at the same time.It requires a special tool you insert first after removing one axle. You will hear a ker plunk noise from inside the transmission, the spider gear dropping out not using this special tool. Also requires a special tool to put the axle back in the hub too.Could be an axle seal too.

I have looked into it a little more and it seems like it may be the pan gasket, now i do not have much experience with autos but would that make sense that it only leaks when standing still as i drove about 400 miles yesterday without needing a refill. I did try a leak stop solution but it still seems to leak.

Where is the breather located is it easy to check.
