I have a 1991 acura legend and the temp gauge is at the max, past the ” h” even in the on position. The temp gauge will stay like that mostly until the engine is shut off. I noticed the the upper radiator hose goes soft after idling for a few minutes. But is still hot. The coolant level is full. The fans operate when the car
Starts getting hotter. I think it might be the thermostat but not positive. Im stuck! Could it be a bad gauge???

There are many possibilities, but if it is showing max temp all the time it is probably guage related. If you can borrow a temperature gun, warm it up and shoot the radiator for temperature and compare to the guage. The approach to a problem like this for a DIYer has A lot to do with what tools and equipment they have to work with. In a shop where you have a scanner to view live data, a cooling system tester and a temp gun, it is a different approach.

The first thing to do is ensure that it is not overheating. Is the radiator hose hot when it “goes soft?”

        Hope this helps,

when the thermistat is open and the water pump is pumping the lower and upper ratator hoses should feel the same in pressure and tempitor… if they dont the you have some kind of clogg or no coolent flow…
personally I would take out the thermistat and put it in boiling water and use some tongs and pull it out… you should see it open and close… I would also pull my water pump out and see if that is good… and would also do a fluch and you could then test the flow of all the paths… if that all shows good… then you can do 2 diffrent ways get a external temp gauge and check it.. and or replace the car coolent temp gauge…
if your car is truelly still hot then you have a clogg in you ratator fins ports and or heator core too… you can try cleaning ratator but you might have to brake it by taking it apart so be ready to replace it… but use a old windshild wiper blades the metal in it works good

Sounds like a gauge issue. The laser temperature tester is a good idea to try. Feel both hoses, the lower hose should be noticably cooler by feel, or vice versa. Squeeze the top hose while running, you should feel the pressure. But if your hose is soft(haha) I would be careful about squeezing it. Does the gauge show hot when the engine is cold?

the gauge skyrockets even on the on position. while the engine is running, i felt both hoses and both had same pressure and the bottom one is cooler then the top.

OK that means you have pressure and since the lower is cooler, your rad is functioning. I would take a look at the temp sending unit for the gauge. There is a separate one for the ecm

i found oil in the spark plug wells, so we ordered new gaskets and tube seals and replaced it. replaced the coolant temp sensor as well. the car is still overheating and now the top and the bottom radiator hoses are super hot.
