Heard two 91 Accords doing this so I thought I would ask.
When it is cold out seems to do it more often.
When the car first starts, there is a squeal that sounds like a belt.
The squel last about 30 seconds then goes away.

      Any idea what that is?
If it is the belt/belts, why does it stop after 30 seconds?

      Thanks

It heats up, gets a little tacky and starts gripping. Could also be a bearing on an acessory or pulley.

Sounds like a loose belt, check the tension and tighten i guess.

You could also try spraying the belts with some of the no-squeal spray, if it doesn’t relaly help, you might have problems with other parts.

I would check on Alternator, PowerSteering pump and A/C Compressor (and clutch)

              Hi cb7ftw,

For the ’91 Accords, there are two drive belts. One drive belt is for the power steering. The other drive belt is for the compressor and alternator. A loose or worn belt will slip and produce a squeal. As pcmdjason points out, as the belt warms up, it grips better. Definitely check the condition and tightness of the belts. Good luck and keep us posted.

I agree it does sound like a loose belt, first start with an inspection to see if the belts are in good shape, if they are old and cracked then I would recommend replaceing them, I would also consider the timing belt at that time as those belts are often replaced at the same time so if the drive belts are old then it’s possible that the timing belt is also old. If the belts are good then check the tension and tighten them if necessairy. The reason it only makes noise for a short time is because as the belt heats up it will have more grip and therefore stop making noise.

Sometimes when it rains, mine will squeal. I used that belt spray stuff and it works pretty good, but sometimes you just have to change the belt.

On my Accord, the power steering pump has some very light seepage that seems to make its way onto the belt. I will occassionally get a slight squeal (for about a second) on startup. You might want to check on the underside of the pump to see if there are any signs of leaks.

Thanks for this tip. My neighbor has some spray on the inside of their hood. Bet that is what is going on with theirs.
