I just recently purchased a 1990 Volvo 240DL for $400. It runs good when it wants to stay running. It has a new alternator and battery and also recently had a tune up. All of the electrical connections are good but I have noticed that I will start it up and it will die on me after about a minuet. Then I have to jump it to get it started again. But after I disconnect the battery that I used to jump it, it dies. But I noticed that when I disconnect the negative terminal on my battery but leave the jumping battery connected it stays running. Mind you the battery I use to jump my car is just a spare battery we have and is not hooked up to another vehicle. So what I’m wondering is if my battery is just not taking a charge. I put it on a slow charge for the night and I will see what it does tomorrow. But if any one has any other ideas I would greatly appreciate it.

Checking connections is actually one of the things I mentioned in both the videos that were presented to you and you are correct that many times you can find issue there.

My only issue with some of your posts is that you stated that things were ‘good’ but did not give actual numbers which would have been helpful, for instance if you stated that the static charge on the battery was 12.6 volts I would know that you have what appears to be a healthy battery, if you just say it’s ‘good’ I have nothing to go on and in fact at that point your testing methods come into question. I sometimes find that people are not willing to do the testing either because they don’t have the proper equipment or don’t wish to take the time to perform the test, this leads to making assumptions which is NEVER a good thing to do when performing an automotive diagnosis. This is just an FYI for future posts. Thanks for keeping us up to date with your progress and for using the ETCG forum.
