I was going down the road the other day and I was passing some one and my all of a sudden my car lost all power and the speedometer bounced up to 120 then went back down to 0 and I saw smoke coming from the cluster. I pulled over checked everything to make sure it wasn’t a fire. When I got home I pulled the speedometer out of the car and noticed the circuit board on the speedo was black and burnt. The car doesn’t have a tach and is no turbo. I was wondering if any one knew of where I could get one or had one for sale for a decent price. I need somthing under $100 thanks every one.

I wouldn’t suspect the speedometer would cause your car to lose power, unless there is some wierd circuitry going on there. Are you still experiencing any performance issues? Dreamer is the Volvo expert around here, mebbe he will have more to offer.

Those instrument clusters are a dime a dozen.

I would try the for sale section at theTurbobricks website. I used to get alot of my parts from there.

You need to figure out why excessive amounts of current traveled to the cluster. You may have a short somewhere, wiring issue or a defective alternator. I would highly recommend tracing the wires back from the instrument cluster back to see if anything else looks fried.

You may also want to find a wiring diagram also and see how voltage is applied to that printed circuit on the instrument cluster.

          Keep us posted.

            Junk yard or E-bay.

Thanks for that tip dreamer. I’d also recommend checking system voltage just to be sure that there isn’t a problem there before you put a new cluster in just to protect your investment. Not a bad idea to check your fuses either as something might have blown when the cluster went.

Ok so I found a cluster for $100 and it’s on the way here. As far as the alternator it’s new (I’m the one who had all the issues with it dying on me) since the speedometer fried I haven’t had any other issues with the instruments at all. I had taken the cluster out earlier that day because there was a couple bulbs out and I’m wondering if I hooked something up wrong or backwards causing a short at the cluster. And I only think that because I had just put the cluster back together before it shorted out. Also if I’m not mistaken more current has to flow to the speedometer to show how fast you’re going. Would it be a good idea to put a fuse somewhere within the wires going to the speedometer? And also I checked all the fuses and none of them are blown.

Did you ever get a diagram for it?
Make sure everything it hooked up correct and that you have no other problems before putting in that new cluster.

Is there anything simpler than a wiring diagram? They look Chinese to me and I can’t follow what’s going where and what’s going to what.

It may very well be something that wasn’t hooked up correctly that caused the failure, as much as I hate to admit this most times in a situation like that it’s an outside force (i.e. you) that inadvertently caused the problem, I suppose we’ll know after you install the new cluster, keep us posted.

Ok does any one have a diagram on how to hook this damn thing up? I put my new speedometer in and it fried again. I feel really stupid that I can’t hook this stupid thing up rite and it’s costing me a lot of money because the stupid thing costs over $100. So I would greatly appreciate it if any one had a diagram showing what wire goes where because there’s three wires that I can’t figure out and I know one is for the tachometer and I can’t figure out which one it is. Thanks every one.

recheck your work did you take pictures before you changed the lights? look at a salvage yard for the next cluster but fix the problem first so it does not get ruined again

when you look at the print. find the piece that says cluster. find the wire colors that you have and match them to the print. find something on the
print as a reference weather its a check engine light trace back from there to the plug or wire. that should match the wire you have.

If you use the free Chilton’s online manual we have a link to, the wiring diagrams there also have some type of documentation on how to read them.

That might make it alittle easier for you.

Well hopefully you have figured the issue out this time for when you buy your new part.

Let us know how it goes!
