When I am on the interstate i would push on the gas pedal and it does not want to gain speed i have changed the spark plugs wires and that helped it to start up fine now but i have no problem from gears 1-3 but when it gets into 4 it wants to stay around 2000-2400 rpm if you have any questions just ask 🙂

CEL on?? if yes, what codes are present?

can you give more details on the problem? you said everyhting is fine in the first three gears? what about speed? can you gain more speed when you are on 3rd more than when you go to 4th?

It actually sounds like it could be a transmission problem. You might start by checking the fluid level and condition.

I am thinking along the same lines as you are because when i push down on the gas pedal it does not want to shift into 3rd gear unless i let off the gas then press it about halfway down the fluids are fine so i am just set in a rut… i am getting the engine rebuilt for 600 at a local shop of mine new rings bearing and all new gaskets because i think it might have bad rings but i have not tested any of these yet. the CEL is not on and having a hard time to find it if it is on because i looked in the cluster and there is no light on it

but i put a light up to every hole in the back where a light bulb goes in and nothing that says CE so i am thinking it might be (using it loosely) OBD 0 but i went out to the junkyard and found the same cluster same make and model and on the back of the cluster it was different wiring then mine… i do not know if they changed it last min it looks the same as mine but different placements of the wires… and not speedometer cable… if i may ask why there is none there?

I’m not a Jeep expert so I really couldn’t say why the clusters are different but things change sometimes mid model year so it’s not uncommon to see changes even in vehicles of the same year. As for rebuilding the engine make sure all the clearances are checked and also the bores, often times it’s necessary to bore the engine out and put larger pistons in to do a proper rebuild. Considering that you have a potential transmission problem perhaps consider finding an entirely new power train and replacing it as a unit rather than trying to rebuild what you have.
