When I am waiting at a light the tach shows 750rpm and the whole car shakes. As soon as I pull away and the rpm goes up, the engine is smooth. This happens even if I shift to N and raise the rpm, engine smooths out at higher rpm. What I’ve done (in general, not to address this issue): plugs, wires, no coolant leaks, (holds 13lbs pressure for 30 min.) I haven’t changed the dist cap and rotor, but they are on my list. I haven’t tried to adjust the valves. Does anyone have some suggestions? thanks, Dave

Make sure all of the engine and transmission mounts are in good condition and that the exhaust system isn’t touching the body or suspension. If any of these problems exist the normal pulsations of the engine will be transferred to the seat of your pants.

I recently changed all the mounts, because they were terrible. Exhaust is not touching body or suspension. Rear suspension needs work. Maybe the car vibrates so much because the rear suspension is worn out.

Did you have the vibration before you changed the mounts? If not I suggest you go over your work. You could try loosening the mount bolts to the frame and tightening them again. sometimes they get bound up if not tightened in the correct position.

You might have a weak cylinder. Try Eric’s power balance test, where you pull off a spark plug wire one at a time. If pulling off a wire doesn’t make much difference, then that cylinder probably is weak. Probably low compression. It could be a spark problem but you replaced the usual suspecs there.

I can be even more specific than College man here as I’ve written an article specifically on Honda rough idle issues.
