At random, two times in the last month, when I turn the key there’s no crank. When I hold the key at the start position, I hear a quiet low hum coming from the direction of the starter/solenoid. I’m in the driver’s seat so can’t be sure of the location, but the manual says there is no starter relay in this automatic trans car.

Both times I momentarily jumpered between the big terminal on the starter and the little terminal on the solenoid. The starter cranked. I then tried the key and it cranked right up.
I have an intermittent problem, but what is it?
      thanks,
      dave

I should add this. Battery is 12.6v. New battery cables, both + and ground. This is an intermittent problem. It started just fine this morning, but not yesterday morning. When it does crank, it cranks at a normal speed. Next test will be to measure the voltage at the solenoid when the key is turned.

I’ve seen this problem before. Turn the ignition switch and get nothing, then crawl under the car and short it and and the car cranks. The starter solenoid was bad, but the owner of the vehicle opted for a whole new starter

Yes, maybe solenoid, but when I supply battery voltage to the solenoid wire by jumping from the starter terminal, solenoid works. Seems to imply that full battery voltage is not being provided from the ignition switch. I don’t know.

Next time you experience this problem I would try jumping the solenoid by using a screwdriver to contact the two terminals on the solenoid. If this cranks the engine over you have a bad solenoid, if not you know its not getting enough juice from the battery.
