This is an intermittent problem. About half the time it shifts fine. But at other times, the engine revs several hundred rpm, before shifting 1-2, and 2-3. Sometimes it’s just the 1-2 shift, sometimes just the 2-3 shift, less frequently both.

I don’t understand how, if the transmission is toast, the problem can occur only sometimes. Anyone have advice? It’s full of fresh fluid. Manual calls for Dextron II. I use the Castrol ATF for Honda. The shop manual says to check the fluid within 1 minute of turning off the engine. I do that, but the method seems inaccurate. 1 minute? 185,000 miles, hatchback.

This may be a shift solenoid problem. Sometimes they get dirty/sticky and don’t operate properly. Sometimes (with age) their coils get weak and they don’t respond to control signals as they should. I would try cleaning and testing the shift solenoids. If you remove them, which you will need to do to clean them, while they are out connect +12v and ground across each solenoid’s terminals. Polarity does not matter for this test. You should hear them click sharply when power is applied. You can also test the resistance of each solenoid coil by reading ohms across the same terminals for the power test. Good solenoids will read between 12 and 25 ohms. Replace if higher than 25 ohms.

Thanks for this info. Will do. If I can’t reuse the gasket under the shift solenoids, can I use RTV?
