1990 Honda Accord LX, 4 Doors, AT, 248,600 miles. I think this maybe two problems, Check Engine Light (CEL) and “S” light.

After reset CEL/ECU code by removed “Back Up” fuse in the under-hood relay box for 10 seconds and put it back, the CEL is steady ON and “S” light is off when I jump “Service Check Connector” at passenger side kick panel and turn key to on position. This is normal according to service manual.

Remove jump wire, drive for about 15 minutes (sometimes longer), the “S” light start flashing while driving. Stop car and turn off engine, then turn key to ON. “S” light remain OFF. Start engine and “S” light still remain OFF like normal. Turn off engine, jump wire. Then turn key to ON, got “S” light short flashing twice (error code #2?) and pulse for 3-4 second and repeat again. Then, repeat two short flashing again. Does anyone know what the problem is and how I can fix it?

If I ignore this problem and drive my car like normal, CEL will steady ON after driving for another 30-40 minutes (sometimes longer). Stop car and turn off engine, then turn key to ON. CEL will ON for 2 seconds and then off like normal. Start engine and CEL and “S” still off like normal. Turn off engine and jump wire, then turn key to ON. CEL reports error code #1 (Oxygen Content (with CATA)). In addition, “S” has one short flashing and pulse for about 1 second, then two short flashing and pulse for another 2-3 seconds and repeat again (error codes #1 and #2?). For CEL, does this mean O2 sensor is bad? Would change O2 sensor fix this problem for sure? For “S” light, what this additional one short flashing means? Thanks in advance!

I had an accord that would do that. I think for the s light you are getting a code 12, if i remember correctly theres only 15 codes for the s light. My accord had a problem with a shift solenoid i drove it for 2 years and right before i sold it i figured out it was a faulty wire. Any ways for codes a long blink is a 10 and short blinks are 1 so a long blink followed by two short ones should be 12.
You might also want to check your transmission control module (TCU) on that generation of accords they are know to go bad and cause the blinking s light. Sometimes when the light starts blinking you cant shift past 2nd gear.

The “S” flashes one short blink, then followed by two short blinks. Are they code #1 and #2 rather than just one code #12? Other than CEL and this problem, I don’t feel or see anything abnormal with the car. I know CEL will fail CA smog check. Will flashing “S” light fail smog check, too?

See if this helps.I don’t know where you live but here in NJ
you can’t have any lights on or trouble faults. Here you would
              fail.

This link talks about CEL, but no “S” light flashing. I searched on internet and all of them talk about CEL. None of them mentioned how to retrieve error code on “S” light flashing and what error code means.

You retrieve transmission codes in the same way you do CEL codes on that vehicle.

You can find a listing of what the transmission codes mean here.

The code 1 likely means you need an O2 sensor. Those old single wires sensors are practically a maintenance item. I think you’ll find it will run much better with a new sensor. I’d recommend a Denso if you can get your hands on one.

Eric, your link is D4 blinking and mine is “S” light blinking. Are they the same? In addition, I filled up my transmission fluid years ago that I purchased from O’Reilly (formally called Kragen) and the bottle has “Specifically made for Honda” words on it. Would this the reason that makes “S” light blinks?

Yes, the ‘S’ light and D4 lights are the same. I have yet to find an aftermarket automatic transmission fluid that works well in Hondas. Therefore I always recommend Honda fluid in Honda transmissions. It’s also important to check the fluid while the engine is OFF, not running like most other vehicles. Another issue I see is overfilling as a result of not checking the fluid properly. As for if that caused your issue, not likely. Seems like you might have some issues with solenoids. You might check the inlets to them first. Sometimes they can get clogged up with debris and they don’t function properly. More info on these issues here.
