      Hey ETCG and people alike!

Just picked up a full size 1990 Bronco 4×4. (Guess I should try to change my user name haha!)

Anyway I am about to do a clutch job on it (full clutch kit without release bearing and as well as replacing the flywheel), and im always hearing that I should replace the slave cyl and release bearing while im at it.

Is this true? I know it’s better to get it done while you have everything apart, but is it REALLY necessary?

Im on somewhat of a budget, so let me know!

      Thanks for your time.

      Danny – CMT

EDIT TO ADD: Any advice I receive on here, I will not hold anyone liable, so let the advice commence!

You should always replace the release bearing when doing a clutch job. It’s a wear item and for the most part it normally comes in a clutch kit. I recommend a clutch kit because you’ll also need the alignment tool and those normally come in a clutch kit. That said many Fords have a combination slave cylinder/release bearing, if that’s the case it should be replaced for the same reasons not to mention if it went bad you’d have to pull the trans again to replace it.

I agree with Eric. Preventive maintenance is key in this type of job.

Thanks for your reply Eric & Dreamer.

Ok I will replace the slave, and yes the slave and release bearing are one unit for this set up. Sadly it doesnt come in the clutch set but the set does come with the Pressure plate, disc, pilot bearing, alignment tool, and insert.

It’s still not a bad price for parts (under 200 bucks) , considering I am doing it myself (thanks to your clutch videos and my Haynes manual lol). I do know it’ll be easier than that 02 focus you did.

            Again thanks for your time.
