Quoted From Trcustoms719:
How do you know it’s in high gear?
Try unhooking the battery for a few minutes to reset everything, then see if the problems still there.
How is the transmission fluid level and condition?i know its high because the car hardly moves forward,,,,when this happened i put the accelerator to the floor and got up to highway speed, never shifted…the fluid was changed around 1 year before…im thinking hard parts have failed,,,but im hoping maybe something simply,,,,,,

Maybe the the solenoid for that gear is stuck on.
Can you shift the car manual starting out in the low gear?October 20, 2011 at 11:00 am #435075Quoted From Trcustoms719:
nope,,,not at all….all forward gears on the gear selector are high gear

Do you have a check engline light? Is the auto trans controlled by shift solenoids, TV cable or a vacuum modulator?

no slippage,,it will get up to speed but in high gear…..no check engine light..as far as what controls it=?…i have a hanyes manual and it states it has some kind of box located in front of the gear selector inside the car…
October 21, 2011 at 11:00 am #435078With KOEO and the brake pedal depressed, can you select the gears ok and does it ‘feel’ like its going into gear if that makes sense?
October 21, 2011 at 11:00 am #435079It’s going to have a TCU that is either bad or the transmission is in limp mode. Check to make sure the fuse isn’t blown first. Also this car controls shift by a solenoid.

like i said, i can fire up the engine, put into reverse, back out the driveway, or even smoke the tires in reverse, but when i put the selector into ANY forward gear=it is in high gear…i will move but feels like im dragging the titanic’s anchor…i looked in the manual and it does have a electric nuetral safety switch and shift solenoid…..im wondering what the fuse description would be for the solenoid

what fuse and its name….this is what im thinking…something simple…….thanks…also if in limp mode…how do i reset? i have no CEL on, and its a obd 1 system
October 21, 2011 at 11:00 am #435082Actually limp in will put you in second gear if I’m not mistaken. It sounds like the transmission is not getting the correct speed signal, being that it’s a 90 the transmission may only be partially electronic and it still may use a ‘governor’ to control part of the shifting instead of an electronic speed sensor. If this is stuck or not getting the correct signal it may cause the transmission to be stuck in a particular gear. The other posibility is that you have a shift valve stuck in the throttlebody somewhere. Also look for any vacuum lines that go to the trans or things on the trans and make sure they are connected and not leaking as one may go to a ‘modulator’ which senses engine load and sends a hydraulic signal to the shift valves that coorilates with engine load.
Those are the ‘simple’ things I can think of.
October 21, 2011 at 11:00 am #435083If it is in limp without a code it generally indicates the actual mechanics of the transmission are the issue. I don’t have a 1g fuse panel diagram…search dsmtuners.com for one. Most people with this issue with these cars are getting it because of a bad TCU.

just finished my search and tommarow will put into action….dsmtuners is a great forum and learned these trans have faulty TCU’s….thanks for the tip…either that or a solenoid wire broke loose…
October 22, 2011 at 11:00 am #435085ok here’s is where im at…since this is a 1990 i used a analog miltimeter hooked to pin 6 and 12..i receive no singal….when i hook it to 1 and 12 for ecm codes i get a continous beep…since 6 and 12 is for checking the TCU, my question is if its bad, would it be non-responsive=no pulse?
