I own a 1989 Honda Prelude Si 2.0L DOHC 5 speed. In addition to needing a speedometer cable, I have one other main problem. The fuel system loses pressure over night.
When I try to start the car, it will simply turn over and over and over.
I have found if I turn it over, then tap the gas 4 or 5 times, then turn it over it will try to start, fuel starved and die. Then if I repeat taping the gas again a few times and start it, it will again sputter, but this time, if I hold the gas pedal down, I can get it up to 2000+ RPMS and hold it there for 15 seconds or so, it will finally get to normal operation. If I turn the car off and then turn the car back on, within the next 5,10,15,20 minutes, the car will start up just fine. Two mechanics said it was the fuel pump, so I paid to have a Honda fuel pump put in, but it still suffers from the same problem.
I’m thinking maybe a leak in the fuel line somewhere, but I don’t think I’ve seen a leak anywhere.
The problem happens from summer to winter and everywhere in between.
Any ideas or tips on where to start looking?
I bought it in this condition believeing it would be as simply as the fuel pump. The previous owner took excellent care of the car, and it’s very hard to find a Honda Prelude that wasn’t destroyed by the previous owner.
