May be a long post but I want to get all the details in because this is a frustrating issue. Car is 1989 Honda Civic Wagon RT4WD with D16A6 and completely stock with 140K miles. Issue is that the engine stumbles (and sometimes shuts off if no immediate throttle input) on a hot start within 5-20 min after shutdown. It acts as if there is a fuel supply issue (running lean). It stumbles across all RPM range and then clears up in about 1 minute on its own. I don’t smell unburnt fuel. The main relay has been replaced with a new one. The fuel system has good pressure and the pressure regulator is working (I have a gauge installed on the filter to monitor). Coolant Temp Sensor (for ECU) has been replaced. MAP sensor has been replaced with new one. The IAC valve has been cleaned but I don’t think it would affect the entire RPM range if bad?? Cold starts are good. There is no air in the coolant system (air bleed shows no bubbles). Distributor cap/rotor/plugs/wires have recently been replaced (this problem predates those changes). Mechanical and electrical timing is dead on. Valves are adjusted. Engine runs perfectly otherwise. Every now and again the idle will run a little low but not sure if that is related. I am now looking at the distributor igniter (I have one from Honda on order). Ideas to look at?

Well, I guess we will find out if that is the issue next week when I get it in. Thanks for the input.

Had a very similar issue on a Civic. The IAC valve was really dirty. Cleaned it and the problem went away.

But… I cleaned it really well.

One of the other leads I was chasing was the engine coolant temperature sensor. The idea being that the engine needs more fuel on a cold start. When the sensor fails, it fails open – resulting in a false low temperature reading. This simulates a cold start even at high temps.

The cylinders end up getting flooded with fuel on a hot start.

I tested my ECT and it turned out to be fine. IAC valve was the last thing on the list of possible culprits if memory serves. Main relay was also examined without finding anything wrong.

Thanks Civvy, I had just replaced the IAC and engine air charge temp sensor when I read your post and the problem is fixed. The IAC had been cleaned, but as I read in a few different places, sometimes they just need to be replaced. That was really the last item on my list as well. I am still not understanding how it affected the whole RPM range. The car now holds a solid idle and performs better during cold start as well.

WHAT? You have an 89 and your dealer has colis? I FINALLY got my hands on a 1991 Honda Civic Wagon RT 4WD and my dealer told me they dont make the coils anymore !?! So I HAD to go with aftermarket. Same for the distributor…and the starter…and just about everything else I have tried to order….WHERE are you getting all your stock parts? I love this car as it is so easy to work on (no pesky computers and lots of room), but also because I AM a Honda Gal, always have been. PLEASE, can you give me the name of your Honda dealer or other location for getting NEW Honda parts?

They used to be Majestic Honda. Not sure now as the URL has changed but they have many parts you can still buy incl. Distributor cap, rotor, gasket, igniter, etc. They do not have coils (or entire distributors), however. Of course, most of the parts for this era are discontinued. But, go to this link and input your car info and browse.
