i recently completed my first engine rebuild on a 1988 Dodge Raider.with a 2600 series engine. We re-used the block, pistons, main caps, and intake rocker arms…….everything else is new. My plastiguage results were immaculate and everything went together smooth short of the timing chain and rocker arm assembly. So fast forward to today…..i get her up to par…pulled the plugs out and went to crankin to prime the hydraulic lifters…. the results were no compression AND no oil pressure!!! My timing marks (distrib.,crank pulley, and cam) all line up, plenty of oil…..i primed the pump upon installation like the instructions said. Here’s the kicker…its the owner of my shop who owns the Raider so you can imagine my despair. can any one help….plz

I also did a cylinder leak down test on number 1 and i had a leak on the intake side. tried loosening my jet valves all the way to see if that would make any difference but it didn’t.

squirt some oil into the cylinders and see if that brings the compression up, kind of odd you don’t have any compression at all.

as far as oil pressure, maybe the pump isn’t picking any oil up did you put oil in the oil filter and all that jazz?

I already put oil in the cylinders…it did nothing. And yes while I had it on the engine stand I turned it on its side and filled it with oil through the oil filter housing.

you have to forgive me because I don’t know as much about this engine as I do a 3800 or what ever, but if a engine is low on compression or has none there has to be a reason and I am trying to think of why…

I would personally check your valve timing too, valves possibly opening at the wrong time letting compression out?

Lets take this one issue at a time;

No compression …
Was the block machined, meaning cylinders honed or bored?
Depending on that…were the correct size rings installed?
Were they properly gaped?
During the engine rebuild, did you off set the piston rings correctly?

You state:
everything went together smooth short of the timing chain and rocker arm assembly.

What exactly does that mean?
Are the rockers all adjusted, gaped and torqued correctly?
You state:
I also did a cylinder leak down test on number 1 and i had a leak on the intake side. tried loosening my jet valves all the way to see if that would make any difference but it didn’t.
Did you try to tapping on the valve with a rubber hammer to attempt to seat the valve(s) on to the seats?
It is not uncommon for valve to stick open after a rebuild and require a whack to flex the valve spring and seat them.

Concerning the no oil pressure issue:
From my understanding the oil filter is on the “back side” of the engine and the oil pump is driven off of the balance shaft; if the chain gets loose or comes off the sprocket, the oil pump quit turning.
If the chain is installed correctly and the oil pump is fully functional, there is still a long distance to go to prime the entire system with oil.
Not knowing exactly how long you were cranking the engine, it may only be partially primed with oil.
What have you checked to know you have no oil pressure?
Did you mount a mechanical gauge?
Is there oil at the filter?
During reassembly is the oil pick up installed correctly?
Are you 100% sure all the oil pump gaskets are installed correctly?
Would not be the first time that 1 gasket installed wrong causing a blockage would have messed up an entire rebuild.
There are methods to pre-oil an engine using a pressurized oiler.

Just tossing out a few possible ideas.

I never did a full re-build of the 2.6L, just head gasket replacement and MCA jets, but I think the oil pump is chain driven and may be related to the counter shaft? I had a Factory Service Manual, but gave it to the guy who bought my Dodge Ram 50.
With the oil problem, is there and galley plugs that might have been left out?
What troubles did you have with installing the timing chain? Could it be installed with the cam out of phase causing the low cylinder pressure?
What issues did you have with the rocker arm assembly? Make sure to leave a minimum 0.010″ gap or more on the jet valve. I set my gap too tight and once the engine got to operating temp, the jet did not close all the way and I burned up the jet valves. Back around 1990 I think they were about $25/each?

Thanks everyone for your help! Every fact shared was both accurate and helpful. Turns out my service writer was only able to find everything on the rocking arm assembly on sock-auto and the rocker arms had the wrong ratio which was holdinG the entire intake on that bank open…..which is why i had no compression and the lifters weren’t priming which explained the oil pressure …..turns out the shop we bought the new head from was quite privy to this problem and sold us a customs kit for our delema, they are adjustable also…..weird setup but runs great. A bit of advice for anyone crazy enough to attempt a resto on these monterro/panjeros…..do alot of homework and save ALOT of money. Parts are few and far in between…. it is fun to drive but it possesses no juavos. Also, i converted it from a manual to an auto which has been even more fun. i am still messing with the valve body so i will keep ya posted….again THANK ALL OF YOU!
