The engine cranks but doesn’t stay running; When I press the accelerator to try to get the engine to sustain an idle, it doesn’t rev; It feels like there is absolutely NO POWER- then it shuts off. The symptoms are similar to when the fuel filter is clogged. Here is what I’ve tried: I made sure it had gas, it’s receiving fuel to the carburetor, there are no fuel filter clogs etc, fuel pump works, I checked the fuses, it’s getting a spark from the coil and it looks like the choke isn’t sticking. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

      Thank You.

I’d be looking at the ignition system. You may have spark, but it might not be happening at the correct time. That doesn’t mean you need to adjust the ignition timing. In fact, I recommend you don’t. What I’m suggesting is that perhaps there’s an issue with the igniter or perhaps the ignition coil causing this problem. It could also be a mechanical issue such as a timing belt that may have jumped time also. In fact, I might check that first as I’ve seen that on your vehicle in the past. You would only need to remove the upper timing cover to check the timing marks. You could also inspect the belt at that time to see if it’s loose or contaminated with oil. The front seals on that engine would often leak and cause that problem. Lastly, don’t rule out a compression issue. Perhaps you have a bad valve or something. It’s not a bad idea to check the compression just to be sure the engine is in good shape mechanically.

          This might also be helpful.

I’ve checked the coil and it’s good; I also checked the timing belt to see if it is broken and it’s not and I also changed the spark plugs.

Make sure there is no air leaks specially from the carburetor flange, its an old car, no wonder if the flange is a bust.

Update: I checked for carb leaks; I also changed the distributor cap, rotor and wire set. It still cranks but doesn’t start.

Resistance checks on ignition coils are a waste of time. I’ve verified this with ignition coil engineers. Since it’s not starting you can apply this test.
