My 1988 Ford Ranger 2.0L has what is called an external fuel pump, it is attached to the engine and no in the fuel tank. I replaced it once along ago, with help so I can’t remember all the details of putting the new one in. The part that is stumping me is, it says “Make sure that the rocker arm is riding on the camshaft eccentric.” How do I do this is? If its not aligned will it not go in?

Depending on if you have a top, center or lower cam location in respect to the rocker arm.

Is this in the correct orientation…
If so the rocker arm will sit on top of the cam as shown.

Yes that is the correct orientation.
So how do I tell if its sitting on top of it? Or is that the only way it will go in?

Basically, look inside the port, eye ball where the cam is located and angle the rocker so that it is aimed for the top of the cam then insert the pump.
Now depending where the high lobe of the cam is, you may have to work against the spring tension of the pump to complete the install.

Or is that the only way it will go in?
I guess if you really try, you could botch it and force the rocker under the cam drive.
Though my thought is that would be some fight to see.

These types of fuel pumps are fairly easy to install.
If your having to battle with it, chances are better than even money you have it in the wrong position.

For the fun of knowledge, how would I change the position of the cam shaft? Also I’m guessing the high lobe is the top?

Also and I know this is alittle off topic but I watched a video of someone trying to diagnose a fuel pump problem and they talked about cycling the key to test for pressure. Question is how and what is cycling the key and what does it have to do with the fuel pump?

In order to rotate the fuel pump cam, you’ll need to rotate the engine.
Preferably by hand with a socket and breaker bar on the main crank nut.

This is typically used for electronic fuel pumps and fuel injection / throttle body injection.
Cycling the key means to go from the off position to the run (not start/crank) in order for the fuel pump to build up operating pressure to the fuel pressure regulator and fuel rail or throttle body injection.

Thank you, if all goes well I’ll be attempting the fuel pump switch tomorrow morning.

The job shouldn’t take more than an hour at most.

Well it took about 2 and 1/2 hours and it took my neighbor 2 mins to do what I still couldn’t by the end of 2 and 1/2 hours. And what was it you ask that was sooooo hard…. 1 bolt at the wrong angle. I hate that bolt.

Sometimes it’s the small things that give the most grief.
Glad to hear you got it done.
