I had my car parked for a few months, stupid me did not use a charger on the battery. It died, I try jumping the car and the car will crank slowly but will not start up. I am not sure if I just need a new battery or could it be something like an alternator or starter issue?

I would drain the lines and replace the fuel filter then to make sure there is no water or contamination in the fuel.

I will try that, because it sputters and nasty smoke comes from the exhaust which leads me to believe you’re right. I had a friend who was convinced it was a vacuum leak but I’m not sure if I agree.

            Progress update:

When the car is started if I press down lightly on the accelerator the car will stay on, at low RPM there is a lot of shaking and sputtering. At high RPM the engine sounds normal and runs smooth. Since the car can start in any gear I took her around the block once, so long as I did not let up on the throttle the car drove smooth but would cut out if I let off.

Is the idle speed set too low?

Sounds like you have a vacuum leak. Possibly from a disconnected or dry-rotted hose. Check your PCV valve hose, make sure it isn’t cracked. Check the brake booster hose also. If you can’t find a vacuum leak, then your idle air passages could be blocked, or the IAC valve is dirty or isn’t working. Cleaning the IAC valve may help. Caution, this is an expensive part, so if it isn’t broken, don’t damage it. It could also be TPS or throttle cable adjustment as well.

I will check the vacuum lines because I did remove the throttlebody to clean it, maybe I missed a hose or maybe something broke.

                    Update:

I used some TB cleaner and cleaned the TB and the IAC (the best I could without taking it off) the car now starts and will stay on without me holding the throttle down but the idle is still very low and rough when at low rpm.

So after cleaning the IAC I can get the vehicle to stay on, but I noticed that the engine is misfiring quite loud while idling very rough.

I would look at plugs, wires, and distributor cap.

I would start with some new gas. Gas goes bad after it sits for a while. No sense attempting a bunch of other fixes until you’re sure you have good fuel in the tank. If it were me, I’d hook up my fuel injector cleaner to see if it ran fine without the fuel in the tank. If it did, I would confirm that the issue is the gas. Similar to what I did here.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I will look into removing the gas, the car was pretty much empty when it sat. I put 2 gal of fresh gas in along with some gumout I did take a moment to switch out the plugs. The battery is on a charger now and I will try and see if she will start up tonight. Below is a pic of what my plugs looked like. Update:

So after replacing the plugs and charging the battery all the way back up. I am still un able to start, what happens is the same cranks no start up, could it be a bad fuel pump? I thought to rule this out because when I hold the throttle down the car will stay on and at high RPM I get no sputter. My personal thoughts is this is a fuel related issue, either a bad pump or the gas has gone bad. The question is would a bad pump work at all to give me the result I am getting also, if the fuel is bad what is the best next step for resolving this?

Over the weekend I took off the intake and cleaned the MAF and put everything back and made sure there were no leaks. I was able to get the car to start and stay on after a few tries, but the idle is still very rough. Here is a youtube video of the car running.

So turned out to be the vane airflow meter. Because its a mechanical type AFM I tried holding the flap open and the car started right up. So… now onto the next problem with the throttle that sticks wide open only if you press the pedal down.
