You need to do some checking to see if it is getting fuel and spark, then focus in the direction of which one is absent.

These carburated models don’t take much to run so it should be simple to diagnose.

A quick way to see if you are getting gas is to pull of the air cleaner, and open the choke plates. Then, push the throttle full open quickly. You should see a fuel spray into the main carb bores (the two closer to the front of the car). This is the accelerator pump doing it’s job. If not, you probably don’t have fuel getting to the carb. If you do, look at ignition next. That’s where I would start at least. The quadrajet is a great carb when working right, and a pain in the @ss when not working right… You could also try starting fluid, but just be careful if you aren’t used to using it to test for fuel/ignition.

I’d also like to add that timing is also important, if the engine is mechanically out of time or the ignition timing is off you will have a crank no start. Here is a video I did on the basics for this problem.

How did you check for no spark? Did you check for spark leaving the coil? Did you ohm out the ignition coil checking for primary and secondary resistance?

When your cranking the engine, do you see the ignition rotor spinning?

Do you have a test light? You can use the test light on the negative side of the coil to see if your getting a trigger signal. The test light should flash or flicker.

sorry for the late response the car is getting fuel but no spark and the timing is not perfect but it should be good enough to start yesterday i replaced the ignition module in the distributor to see if that would do it. it cranks alot better but still wont start, Also the plug wires have been replaced already.

That should have GM’s lovely HEI distributor. If you replaced the “module” on the top of the distributor, that’s yer coil. Are the connections corroded in there? Are you getting spark to the plugs? I would use a spark tester to see if you are getting spark to the plugs. If not, work backwards, and look for corrosion/broken connection. Also check and make sure you are getting a signal from the sensor that tells the coil when to fire. I’m not totally familiar with that system. I don’t know if it’s a sensor in the distributor or a cam sensor. You would have to get a wiring diagram to be certain.

Make sure you don’t accidentally touch something on the HEI pack with any juice going to it. You might “self tazer” and find yourself with a limp arm for a bit.

I used a spark tester that plugs into the plug wire like the one etcg used in his no start vid. and yes its the hei system when i took the cap off the distributor it was greasy and dirty especially the rotor i cleaned up most of the dirt.

If you want to solve this problem and not spend a lot of money you need to find out what is missing when you try and start the car, you can’t just throw parts at it and expect it to get better you need to do some testing, make your checks and THEN replace broken parts when you find them, this video covers the basics of diagnosing a no start condition.
