Im not sure if this is the right place to post this but i have 240,000 miles on my car and im pretty sure the gear oil has never been changed. the rear end is holding up fine so far and i was wondering if i should change the gear oil or just leave it alone idk if gear oil evaporated over time or what so let me know what you guys think i should do.

Probably not a bad idea to change it, it’s not like transmission fluid in that if you haven’t changed it in a while it can cause problems. Just make sure to check if it’s a limited slip differential or not if it is it requires a special additive. I check for this by jacking up both wheels and spinning one, if it’s difficult to turn and both wheels move in the same direction it’s an LSD differential, if the other wheel spins in the opposite direction then it’s not an LSD differential and you can just use regular gear oil I think 80W90 but check the service manual to be sure.

Thanks for the reply Eric unfortunately i do not have a LSD differential i just want to maintain the car because it is my daily driver and it has so many miles.
