      Hello,

I recently rebuilt the drum brakes on my 1987 4runner. There was a leaking cyclinder so I decided to redo the whole back. New pads, cylinders and springs. Bled the system twice and the pedal is still spongy. I’ve adjusted the star wheel on the rears to where there is slight resistance. Seemed to help but I don’t want to over do it. I made sure that the master cylinder never ran dry during the whole process to avoid damage or air occurring. I’m considering bleeding this system again, but wanted any input anyone has. The pedal is nice and firm when vehicle is off but drops when key is turned and begins to run. Is there something I’m missing or something I’m forgetting to do. The booster and master cylinder was replace in late 2005 when I first purchased the vehicle. So maybe those are wearing out. Thanks

sound like a simple case of air in the system.

It’s possible that there is still some air in the system or the shoes are not seating correctly in the drums. You might have to drive it and use the brakes a bit to seat them if you feel that you can stop safely. You can adjust them up a little tighter if there is no drag after the drive.

That’s what I thought. I’ve driven it around my complex and it stops, just not a solid as before. More travel in the pedal. After the first run around I readjusted the star wheel on the driver side again because it had loosen up slightly when I was doing a recheck. I’m planning on checking it again this weekend and making another pass at bleeding and make sure the parking brake is not affecting anything since it is connected to that side. Thanks

Thanks I’ll end up doing this too.
