Hello all! I have a 1986 Ford F-150. Inline Six XLT Lariat. Striaghtpiped (No catalytic converters)

For a while i have been noticing a strange noise from my exhaust. It’s like a “put put put” Every few seconds or so. Is this a misfire?

Just changed my plugs recently, but one had oil on them (Not alot) Pointing to an old valve cover gasket..

Until today my exhaust manifolds had been glowing, suggesting retarded ignition timing. I finally timed it by ear today (I know, not completely proper please dont scold me ) And the glowing went away! Thankfully, but im wondering about this putting noise now.

The exhaust is straightpiped and glasspacked. There are no emissions laws in MT.

If the exhaust manifolds where glowing it very well could have burned an exhaust valve and that would cause your exhaust note. A check with a vacuum gauge could verify it. I would also be certain though to get all the ignition components checked out as well as timed properly, along with checking compression and a leakdown test if necessary to be certain about the overall condition of the engine.

I had my engine gone through a few weeks ago, because i had the radiator replaced. And they said the engine looked fine and nothing lead them to any other problems. Could be a burnt valve, could be a fair amount of things i suppose :/
