      1986 Toyota 4 Runner, 22 R-E–M,T,4-wheel drive; EFI sys.

When driving at any speed, truck runs smoothly; THEN I turn on something (anything) truck (Fred) does a quick jerk, but smooths out; THEN I turn on one more thing, Fred jerks like he’s been wounded, but troops on; THEN just ONE more thing…FRED’S DEAD!

What’s happening, Why is it happening, and how to I fix Fred?

      Thank you,

      Jude

Well Fred seems like he’s having some tough times.

The first thing I would do is take Fred somewhere and have the charging system checked. To me this sounds like a battery/alternator problem where turning things on is causing your voltage to drop below 10 volts, which is what your ignition needs to operate properly.

Fred appreciated the new battery and alternator I put in last month, but still gives up the ghost when asked to handle more than three electrical demands.

          Thank You,
          Judy

No, just any additional loads of any kind, and in any order; zap, Fred’s dead.

Sounds like one of 2 things. The first is the charging system as mentioned. Not all parts are created equal, don’t trust them. Check the actual charging system voltage and see what you have. More info here.

The next thought is something with the idle circuit. If it’s carbureted then perhaps there’s an issue with the stepper motor that’s suppose to bump the idle when loads are put on the engine. If fuel injected, the idle air control valve. More info on those here.
