I have a 1985 Pontiac Firebird S/E with a 2.8l V6 my engine recently kicked the bucket and I’ve been researching and all over the web and can’t find any luck with anything so hoping you guys can help me out. I want to do an engine swap on my car but I want to drop a 305 Chevy Small block into this but here’s my question, will it easily fit? or would I be better off on buying a new crate or a rebuilt 2.8L for an easy install?

The engine itself wil fit. you will need to change a variety of things such as radiator , motor mounts , alternator , trans cross member , ecm.

So do you think it would just make more sense in just purchasing a new Chevy 173 2.8l?

I agree. You will have to change the whole drivetrain along with the motor mounts etc.

You can buy a long block for the V6 at Rockauto.com for less than $1200. You should check it out.

Because I know the other models of the firebird had a 5.0l 305 in them but I’m sure the engine bay is bigger compared to mine.

Do you happen to know where RockAuto has their crate engines at? I can’t seem to locate it..

a V-6 to v-8 is a major undertaking. in addition to the radiator and accessories and ecm, you would require a transmission, a drive shaft and possibly a rear end. a better route might be to replace the 2.8 with a 4.3. better engine, and they scream if you modify them with turbos. you would still need an ecm, unless you can find someone that can create a controller for you. do some extensive research before attempting this though.

They only have a long block and not a crate engine. you would have to use your intake and everything on it.

Select Pontiac/1985/Firebird/Engine/Long Block, or something close to that.

It’s a big undertaking as stated and you’ll also need the transmission. That said I’d forget about the 305 and go for a 350 instead. It’s a much better engine and easier to find parts for. Also know that you may have to change the front coil springs to support the additional weight. While you’re at it you might as well upgrade the rear end and the rest of the suspension. See where this is going? It’s going to empty your wallet and max out your credit cards. That’s why it’s so fun I suppose. 🙂

if money and time isnt an issue, id go with a LS6 out of a last gen GTO followed by its 6 speed.
