The Car: 1984 Mercedes 190d 2.2L Naturally Aspirated Engine. 5spd manual trans. 254,000 miles
I’ve had this car for about 6 years, but I didn’t drive it much because it never really ran great. It has suffered from a poor idle and low power since I’ve had it. It gets worse as the car heats up and after it has been driven a bit. About a year ago I decided I was going to learn how to fix it up. The only knowledge I have is from online reading, a couple friends, and now thanks to Eric, I have gained more knowledge an confidence than ever so this will be be a fun project. My goal is to turn this into my daily driver. I commute 35 miles to and from work and its possible in the next year I will have a job that has me traveling for work so I would love to have this car to do it with.
What I’ve done so far:
- Rebuilt fuel injectors with new nozzles, “pop” tested a balanced them.
- Replaced fuel screen in tank
- Replaced primary and secondary fuel filters
- Replaced vacuum fuel delivery pump
- New pads, rotors, brake hoses and front calipers (also working on parking brake, had to remove them for now)
- replace return valve on the injection pump
When I replaced the return valve I discovered that at some point mine was in the wrong place and the previous owner had installed it in the inlet side of the injection pump, starving it for fuel… because the plungers in the pump are lubricated with diesel fuel, its quite likely the injection pump is not functioning properly and at the very least needs to be calibrated.
Where I’m at now:
- Used injection pump ordered, waiting on delivery
- pulled the cylinder head due to compression loss on the #1 intake valve — Trying to decide the best way to proceed…local rebuild, send it away to a benz specialist for rebuild, or buy a rebuilt head…
254,000 miles…just getting broken in. Hard to see in the picture but check out the cross hatching! That was nice to see!
messy, but organized!
Thats it for now…I’ll keep you all posted…. wish me luck!
