Hey everyone! I have a 1979 Corvette that has been sitting in a garage for 15 years or so. I have begged my folks to let me fix it up and they finally said I can. My problem is I’ve never worked on something this old and don’t really know where to start. The engine was rebuilt before it was put away and the interior is all pulled out. Right now I’m more worried about getting it running, interior I can do later. The carb is out and I think it was rebuilt but it was covered in sawdust and dirt. I was hoping someone could point me in a good direction to get started. I’m not afraid to do the work myself but I want to make sure that the steps I take are logical. Thanks! 🙂

For starters, after sitting for 15 years, I’d pull the heads and check the bores, rings and pistons for corrosion.
As far as the carb goes, I’d completely disassemble, clean and rebuild it with fresh gaskets and seals. A point to watch for on carbs is where the throttle shaft ends rotate inside the body casting. If the shaft can rock or wiggle in the bores, you can either replace the entire carb with a new aftermarket unit, or have bushings fitted to the old carb.

Pretty cool car to get as a project. Corvette Summer baby! I did a ZZ5 and T56 install into a customers 79 some time ago.
Plan on replacing everything rubber.
After you get it running, all the rubber in the suspension should be next. Don’t forget brake lines, caliper seals etc
At least it’s been stored inside.
