I have a 77 dodge sportsman robinhood rv which has the 7.2 440 and 727 tranny. The old A/C system in this vehicle was R12 and the hoses were all rubber. I’m assuming that I can’t just retrofit that with R134a unless I get new lines, dryer and all that? I’m not sure what I should be looking for to upgrade the A/C into working condition again. Any suggestions or help is welcome. I do understand how the A/C system works on newer vehicles and I do have manifold gauges, vacuum pump and all that…

I actually called my local dodge dealer this morning and they stated that I should be able to just retrofit this A/C and possibly replace the dryer then test for leaks and functionality/noises using R134a. He said the hoses should be fine and that if I charge the system up a bit and it’s quiet and has no leaks that it would work fine but if not then think about replacing the compressor too. But he did mention that as long as there’s nothing clogged in the other parts, the compressor and dryer would be where to start and then move forward from there if there are any remaining issues. I guess my main concern was whether or not I would need to make some new custom a/c lines or find ones that are the right legnth to use in this vehicle. I will be very happy if it all works out this way. I’ll reply here when I get ahead a few steps for anyone else following this.
