      Recently bought a 74 Jeep Cherokee. I have a very nice truck and the wife’s mini van but I wanted something to play with.

      I am tired of working on the new cars that give me migraines and wanted something old school with points ignition and no computers!

      The drive train is in good shape and everything works like it should. It sat for a few years so it needs some TLC.

      The vehicle spent a lot of time near the ocean in Mexico and has some body rot. The inner & outer rocker panels are gone and the rear quarter panels need replaced. The front floor pans are pretty much gone. Everything else rust free.

      What I have done so far………
      Oil change and filter
      I replaced the brakes on all 4 wheels ( 4 wheel drum). New shoes, spring kits, wheel cylinders and lines. Master cyl. was good so left it for now.
      Replaced all the vacuum lines under hood
      Rebuilt the Carter YF carburetor
      Installed new fuel filter and fuel lines front to back.
      Installed 4 new/used tires (old ones were very dry rotted)
      Removed the fuel tank and drained and cleaned it.
      I welded in new floor pans in the front. (both sides)
      Had to fix the rods inside the front doors because they wouldn’t open from the inside.
      Had to fix the regulator on the rear tail gate window. (one side came loose and it rolled up and down crooked)
      Drained and refilled front & rear differentials
      Checked & topped off the transmission and transfer case with fluid

      Stuff left to do……………

      Need to weld in new rocker panels (inner & outer)
      Need to replace the rear quarter panels
      Need to replace the windshield (crack down the drivers side) ( cops here love to give tickets for that :ohmy: )

      I am in no hurry and will do stuff as time & money allow…..mainly money. :dry:

              It looks pretty solid. Is the roll cage stock? And is it a Manuel tranny? I’ve got a 1994 Cherokee I never knew jeep Cherokees where out before 1984

                The drive train works perfectly flawless.

                It has the 258 which runs excellent and it came with a 3 speed manual but it has been swapped out for a T18-1B 4 speed manual with the 6:1 granny first gear, Dana 20 gear driven transfer case, Dana 44 in the rear with a limited slip, Dana 44F in the front which I plan on an ARB locker.
                The roll bar is not stock and was added by someone, I had to remove it because it wouldn’t let the front seat go back very far without hitting it and I am 6’2″ and needed the legroom.
                You have the little Cherokee, This is the Full-size Cherokee. They started making Cherokee in 1974 so this is the first year they made them and continued to 1983 then in 84′ they started making the smaller Cherokee’s.

                Next step is new rocker panels welded in and new lower rear quarter panels and then a paint job. I do need a couple bucket seats for it as the bench seat was pretty destroyed. I put some new foam on it and recovered it but it didn’t come out great. I would rather have buckets and a console.

                  It really doesn’t matter where this lived, rust would still be an issue. Those old AMC Jeeps were notorious for it.

                  Nice to see some old iron being worked on. It’s a much more “human” level of design and engineering. Modern electronics have no soul and deliver no joy.

                    Indeed. The old cars give you a more sense of pride in it. And there easier to work on

                      MUCH easier to work on.
                      Just a little harder to find decent used parts and even some new ones.

                        I know a guy who has a 1952 jeep cj and he was saying parts for it are surprisingly easy to come by
