      Hello! I have a 1974 f100 with a 302. Recently swapped with a rebuilt 302.

A few weeks ago I replaced my radiator cap as the old one was rusty. A few days after I switched from a 190 to a 180 degree thermostat.

Over the past few days I’ll drive my pickup to work which is roughly 15 miles, shut it off. And minutes later it will start leaking coolant.

I had no idea from where until tonight when I finally spotted it coming from the end of the upper radiator hose to where it clamps to my tstat housing. The upper hose was very hard and pressurized. I popped off the cap on the rad and the leak almost immediately stopped.

Is this a hose failure? I will be replacing it in the morning but would like some input. The hoses are fairly old.

Sounds like a clamp installation failure.

If you hose was pressurized from engine running, it will fill firm and is normal as opposed to more compressible when car has sat for awhile. Things leak more when under pressure. So letting pressure off system and leak stopping can be expected. You can rent a pressure tester for coolant system from most part stores to find leak.

If the leaking is seeping at between hose and thermostat housing and not a hole in the hose, try just tightening clamp and see it it stops. Best of luck. Be sure to top back off fluid.
