I am working on restoring a 1971 charger . It has a 383 engine 2 barrel carb and a 727 torqueflite tranny.Everything is coming along and i realized i dont even know what type of fuel the car is supposed to take. On the vehicle there is a tag that states that the vehicle is in accordance with the clean air act of 1967. Does that mean my car can only take leaded fuel? If so are additives already placed in our un-leaded fuel or do i have to buy thoose?

Got any pictures of it? Also I had no clue on what fuel you would have to use, So I did some searching and came up with this.

High performance cars from the 60’s and early 70’s require high performance gasoline. Unless the engine has already been modified, pre-1971 cars require leaded high octane gasoline to run correctly. Because leaded gasoline is no longer sold in the United States, owners of these types of vehicles need to buy lead substitute additives (around $2-$5 per bottle). A bottle is generally good for one tank of gas. Lead is critical because it acts as a lubricant for the internal engine parts and stops them from wearing out prematurely. Engines built in 1971 and later are built to run on unleaded gas so adding lead substitute is not needed. In fact, lead damages Catalytic Converters, which are required on cars built after 1977, and is more harmful to the environment. Adding a lead additive to a pre-1971 engine will literally prevent the engine from beating itself to death.

Thanks..the pictures are on my profile. If you click my member ID name the pictures should come up.

I did some reasearch on the clean air tag and it turns out cars in accordance with the 1970 clean air act dont use leaded fuel however with my car its basically on the begining of the leaded fuel change so i just want to be sure . Thanks again.

Not sure why I didn’t check your profile, I normally do. Anyways it looks like a fun project. It is kinda tough to determine what type of fuel your going to have to run Being that close to the change. Hopefully you got the new engine!

Are you going to keep it stock or do some upgrades?

I found out if i get the heads hardened and change out some valves then i can use unleaded. I want to keep the car as stock as possible but upgrades are needed. The front brakes are drum and i want to change them to disc. I am going to change the 2 barrel to a 4 . A new exhaust is needed, possibility of changing the exhaust manifold and intake mainfold. It has a 727 automatatic i dunno if i want to change it to maunel, thats probably years down the line before i do that.

cool project. 383 is a good motor ( had a 71 duster that we stuffed… and I do mean stuffed a 383 into … was one fast car ) what shape is the motor in. if you are planning to pull the heads you may want to ” freshen up ” the bottom end. for the heads a mild port and polish plus springs matched to a better cam ( since your planning on going up to a four barrel ) keep the 727 really good tranny just beef it with a shift kit and better t-convertor. ah the list could go on and on… have fun with the project and keep us posted.
