Start with the basics. Make certain that the timing chain is intact, valves are opening and closing. Make certain that you have spark, then do a compression test.
its an electrical problem. the battery keeps on dying. the starter motor, solonoid and battery is hot to the touch
Disconnect the battery and turn it over by hand with a ratchet in the crank bolt. You should feel compression but it should turn fairly easy. If you can barely turn it or can’t turn it then it is a mechanical problem and the battery and starter are doing all they can. If none of the accessories are frozen then it is an internal engine problem.
The reason for disconnecting the battery is it could start this way.
Otherwise I’d suspect a bad starter.
I think starters from that era used a movable field coil to push the Bendix into the flywheel. That mechanism can go astray with time. Still, if the engine turns hard even a new starter will get hot.
Rule out physical problems with the engine which would cause all the symptoms you are describing. If the engine checks out, then verify all your wiring connections, and after that, I would say the starter is probably suspect.
the starter was my hint on the problem. the problem was the distributor was not aligned. 4 different prajectories upon placing it. it explains why im having issues with my fuel pump and its not breathing properly and sometimes would fire. I have my doughts the cam is damaged but there is a bit of wearing from the hard evidence that its truly the distributor is the issue
