Would anyone here know where I can find a crossmember or a universal crossmember that will work for my 1961 Ford Falcon Ranchero? I converted from a 2 speed fordomatic to a c4 that came out of a 1966 mustang. Im looking for one that will work with my e-brake.

My last consideration is using the old crossmember by modifying it by drilling holes into the crossmember so the rubber mount fits on and then moving the crossmember itself 2 inches backwards by drilling holes, tap and die into the frame and bolt it in and then tighten up the e-brake cable 2 inches. Also, the frame is hallow to add additional washers and bolts.

What do you think about modifying it? What would be the pros and cons?

If all you have to do is move the cross member back and drill new holes
to mount it sounds easy enough.

What about the cross member from the mustang?

a mustangs crossmember will not work at all unless I welded pieces on for that. its a bit smaller and has rubber garmets on the ends. Instead of tapping and die, Im thinking of bolts, nuts, washers and rubber washers to prevent the vibration. I don’t have to tap and die since there already is a cut away to put washers, nuts and rubber washers in. this cutaway is mainly for water run off when water gets inside the cab

Relocation should be okay. I would recommend ensuring the hole drilled into the frame be as exact as possible. This isn’t something you want to have any ‘wiggle’ chance.

(I’ve always been a fan of the FMX series aka, Cruse’o Matic. Cast Iron case=Heavy as it gets, and darn near bullet proof. I blew up 3 of the C-4 transmissions in my older ford when I was in college. We always joked that’s why they called it a “C-4” transmission. Then again I did have it behind a 351W)

              Good luck with it!

mine is an aluminum case which is why I put this into consideration and save $100 to put into something else for the car.

If it’s a direct fit, then the choice seems clear. As long as you’ve got some clearance for the transmission, I’d go with it.

I’d relocate it. I can’t see how it would cause any issues and you already have the parts to work with .

Good luck and keep us posted.

It has been successful, relocation wasn’t a bad idea. I saved $100 on a new crossmember minus the bolts, nuts, washers and cobalt driblets I bought. so about $60 I saved. Im running into another problem with the engine as I create another thread for it.

I will post pictures of how I did the retrofit if anyone is interested in doing this. bought a 66 mustang c4 automatic transmission for $200. I hear they are easy to rebuild for the worst case senario.

Heres what I did. Dropping it an inch did work. My next question is slip. it measure 1.5 inches. this driveshaft and yoke came outta a 72 ford maverick. Is 1.5 inches of slip good?
