That looseness is somewhat normal. The rear bearing could be worn, There is a bushing at the rear behind the seal that the driveshaft yolk rides on that stabilizes the movement there. You can see it in the pic.

I took the seal and bushing to a transmission shop and they told me my yoke and extension housing is shot. $100 for a used one.

Thats interesting. As posted above, there will be a little play in the shaft. The drive shaft holds it in place and seals against the tail housing bushing. In fact, if you have a leak back there it’s actually the bushing that is the most likely suspect.

Keep us updated after the fix.

Metal to metal wear is normal inside an automatic transmission. It’s just a matter of severity and if it effects shift quality. More info on what’s in there here.

I replaced the bushing, seal, bell housing and yoke. Gonna fire it up tomorrow after pulling the engine and tranny out for a paint job and inside the engine bay.

Eric, Can you make a video on manual transmissions? I’d love to see the basics of it. Thanks for finding my true profession by just watching your videos. Keep the very technical stuff coming.

Seeing your picture takes me back. In college I owned a 1970 Ford Maverick with the 170 motor, dog dish hubcaps, AM radio and 13 inch wheels. I drove that car 140K miles until the body got rusty. Then I took it to a body shop for repair. The owner, writing a repair quote, gave me a puzzled look and asked, “Why do you want to do this?”

BTW, after trading in a VW beatle on the new Maverick, my car payments were $31.13 a month for three years.

Looks very familiar. I believe I have the same engine in my Fairmont. Nice paint job BTW.

I’ve been wanting to do a video on manual transmissions for some time. I just haven’t had one come into the shop needing service. I was actually thinking about getting one from a salvage yard to tear apart in a video. For now you might find useful information here.
