      Hi
I just got a 180SX with a ca18det engine. the car currently running rich.

I have already checked the MAF and cleaned it. the O2 sensor was replace d not long ago.

the fule system is also cleaned with some commercial product. but the car still running rich and sometimes even got back fire.

In addition, while I was driving, some times the car just suddenly feels lack of power.

Because the ECU was pre-consult, so I made a DIY diagnostic box (2 LED flash type). I got a code 34, I know it is the knock sensor. could that cause the problem I have?

I heard that I can just bypass the knock sensor. is that an safe option?

      appreciated for any help.

I would be checking your mechanical timing.
also try the power balance test. heres a video
whats the year make of the car?
You may also want to check your egr valve is working correctly.
I’m also going to throw in searching for vacuum leaks. use the procedure in the
video. using a spray bottle filled with water.
also check fuel pressure and the regulator

I would start by addressing the knock sensor code, I would repair it rather than trying to bypass it. I would also check for vacuum leaks. Older fuel injection systems weren’t as good with their O2 monitors and as a result you could have a slow or ‘lazy’ O2 sensor giving bad readings the the computer, you may want to just change it out as we used to do that as part of a tune up anyway. Here’s a video link on how to check for vacuum leaks.

The car is 1990. basically stock. not much mods. I’m not after huge power now, just trying to get the engine working properly.
