I have a 2015 Mazda 3. I always followed the oil change interval when I ran about 5000 miles with my old car. Can I get away with 10,000 or more miles with my new car? I would assume yes, but I’d have to look into the manual when I should be changing my oil, at what interval? Also, I was told by the dealership that this car only uses synthetic oil. Again, I’d have to look into the manual but I could use some answers here as well.

well first oil change should be a little sooner then 10,000 miles but no harm dont worry but i would change now and change every 10,000 miles if you stick with synthetic
Always go by the manual,but just remember these are the recommended [u]MAXIMUM[/u] intervals, and do not include special operating conditions. Short trips ,freezing temps,dusty areas etc, which can change the intervals drastically. I change mine a lot more often.I like my engine cleeeen. :woohoo:
The skyactiv is a very clean engine. I would still reccomend every 5,000ish.

The oil change intervals are based on the car makers carbon footprint. hence the longer the car goes without an oil change the less oil you have to dump which in turn gives the car maker a better carbon footprint rating with the EPA. Just like CAFE standard. whats best for the car maker isn’t necessarily best for you. Some manufacturers have actually backtracked on their recommended service intervals when they notice their engine exhibiting problems. Mercedes is one i know for a fact. I wouldn’t go more than 6,000 miles with synthetic oil and 4,000 miles with conventional. Aslo even if you use the correct oil but buy the cheapest filter you are doing yourself a disservice, that filter wasn’t designed to handle those extended oil change intervals.
I wonder if anyone here know the printable coupon for Jiffy Lube that’s $15 off? I was able to find the $10 off coupon but I know there’s a $15 one that’s floating out there. I was able to find the $10 one just by typing the site jl then your state dot com (ex: jlalabama.com). Not sure if it works for other states but for mine it does. It gets updated monthly so the coupon is always valid and not expired.
I’m not sure why synthetic oil was suggested to me by the dealership person because I just read the manual stating just either 5w-30 oil or 5w-20 oil can be used, no mention of whether synthetic is necessary. I had experimented using different engine oil for my old car before which uses 5w-30 but I went with 10w30 as well. It ran just fine.
The manual mentioned 12 months/10,000 miles oil change interval, plus my car is supposed to have a maintenance monitor (maybe my car model doesn’t have it, but the manual is for all Mazda3 models).
I would recommend using the correct weight oil that is called for in your vehicle. tolerance inside an engine are much tighter today than in years past. Also lots of engineering goes into figuring out what is the best weight oil. Systems that have Variable valve timing, which these days are more and more common may need a certain weight oil to work correctly.
As far as Jiffy Lube goes be careful with a place like that. You get what you pay for. their is a reason it only cost 10 dollars.
I’m a Mazda Certified technician working at a dealership near Charlotte. The oil in your 2015 Mazda 3 should be changed every 5,000 miles or 4 months along with the oil filter. Replace with Full Synthetic 0w-20 oil, 4.5 quarts. Going 10,000 miles without an oil change is dangerously close to voiding your warranty.
