Actually FWIW, since around 2011 Toyota has switched many of its vehicles to 0w-20….
-Karl
As a GM technician, I know GMs new truck engines also use the stuff. Its a full synthetic dexos oil and it might as well be water. Other than CAFE standards is there any reason they use the stuff? The parasitic drag on the rotating assembly can’t be that different than 5W-30.
Mobile 1 did a big add campaign about a year ago about their zero weight oil how it belonged in everything. They acted so impressed with the mileage increases. The differences were VERY small, so small, that I ran that against my current MPG and the increased cost of the oil….guess what? The tiny bit farther that my car would go (not much) per gallon was 1/2 as good as it’s cost increase.
Paying for more…getting less.
Note: I’m an avid user of synthetic oil, feeling my car running smoother, happier, more efficient, and more powerful, so this isn’t from a guy who doesn’t appreciate fine oil.
And by the way, I like my fries, fried in Canola oil. :)
ah, thank you for verifying my suspicion. I use Dino oil 15w-40 on my own veichles. I see nothing wrong with synthetic oil however, my engine seems to prefer Dino.
October 14, 2014 at 5:19 pm #627174
I’m glad the interwebs somehow agreed with me…
Usually I do not get involved with oil threads…. Reason is… Some people think there is some magic holy grail of oil that will make their cars last 1,000,000 miles and get 50 miles per gallon….
Simply stated… I always say this…. Use the oil which is recommended for your vehicle and is API Certified… plain and simple… If it calls for Dino Oil, give it Dino Oil… If it calls for synthetic, give it synthetic…. If it calls for 5w-30, give it 5w-30…. Change it when it should be changed, and if you live in a harsh environment, use the harsh environment recommendation timeline to change oil.
There is no one magic formula… If you think there is one with AMSOIL, or Mobile one or the Walmart special then please go to Bob is the Oil guy (BITOG) and argue it until the point is belabored past recognition with so many “experts” who can tell you about the specialized amount of additives, or cleaners in their favorite “magical” oil that makes one better than the other…
Me, I am sick of it…. Tired of hearing about how someone with 300k miles on a car that is now ticking thinks that now switching to synthetic will get another 100k miles out of it…… PLEASE….
Just ranting… nothing against you… Just oil related questions press my button…
Cheers!

I agree with the “oil mysticism” that infects people’s minds.
I had cause decades ago to look into a few lubrication issues. All of the fluid flow math for lubrication was laid out by Isaac Newton and Osborne Renyolds a few hundred years ago. Being mystified about lubrication just means you haven’t done the math. Which is quite forgivable, as the math is quite complex, and I wouldn’t enjoy doing it again.
October 15, 2014 at 6:40 am #627395You’re welcome Chevyman21. The increase in efficiency was admitted, it was quite slight, but I’m a tracker of MPG and it’s not hard to find online calculators that’ll use what you pay for gas, how far you drive, and your mpg. Using that with real numbers, I synthesized numbers based on the increases they claimed, figured in my 5.5k mile oil change, and found it to be as I described in general terms.
By the way, for me to see fairly clean oil at that distance, requires Mobile 1’s extended performance “15k mile” formula and their extended filter. I need to change my oil at 4.5-4.75k miles if I use the regular synthetic formula.
I heard a comment recently by a auto-technician that he’s seen a few new BMW’s with the supposed 15k mile oil change with sludged up engines in need of engine repair. NEW BMW’s.

By the way, I used Mobile’s listed no.’s for how much improvement I’d theoretically get versus their regular synthetic formula. I lasered in on details like that to be sure they weren’t claiming it versus conventional oil. I get a very useable and cost effective increase in MPG from going synthetic. Castrol’s Edge seems to be undescribabbly different for me thatn Mobile 1. I just happen to find Mobile 1 on sale more often, lol. I think my oil change interval match their price reduction sales. lol
Chevyman21, if you’re vehicles have shown you what they like, then if you ask me, that’s all a person can do. 🙂
Rereonehundred, you did that math on how fluid flows! Jealous! 🙂 Wait…I did fluidic Calculus in high school. I just never applied it to oil…let alone the complexity of all the factors in an engine. Wow…did you just do general oil flow equations or taking all the different points of an engine into an account to?

Before my 08′ got totaled thats all I used in it. I tryed royal purple at one point however and found it to perform the same as any other full synthetic. My older motors do very much prefer dino oil 🙂
