      4.8L V-8 274000 miles.

this is my work truck, so it gets alot of mileage(about 70-200 miles a day).
When i first start off in the morning, shifts fine. once it warms up, it slams into second, sometimes so hard it chirps the tires, thirds not so bad, OD is about normal. if its going long distances (30+ miles in one trip) it will slip out of OD until i pull over, put it in park, turn it off, let it sit for a minute, and turn it back on. then it will stay in OD until it decides its had enough, slips out again. i babied it through the rough part of winter, but now that its starting to warm up, the trans is now overheating.(did this the first time today, about 63 degrees today). cant tell you the codes off hand, but i had the guys at the auto center run them off for me. descriptions are:

      slipping trans mechanism
      sensor failure
      trans failed to shift properly,slipping.

as soon as i have my hands on an OBD II ill have codes to follow.

It sounds like the trans has seen better days.
keep us posted with the codes.

It does sound like you might end up needing a new trans or having yours overhauled. You can try changing the fluid and filter but once the internals wear out there really is no turning back. More info can be found in this article.

Good luck and keep us posted.

ive heard alot of bad things about the 4L60E trans. so bad that there is a website that lists 30 common problems…..discouraging. it started making a new noise today. slowing down from the first runthrough of the gears i can hear a obvious tink/thump. almost like the a/c compressor but more abusive. another thing ive found today is that if i keep the engine temp under 210 it does fine, once it gets to 210 it starts screwing up. wonder if the temp sensor has something to do with this as well. ill be taking it to the shop this week anyways. keep ya posted. and eric, you are epic bud!

A friend of mine has a Jeep Grand Cherokee that was also starting to have transmission problems. He installed an external cooler and hasn’t had any problems since. I’m not saying this will cure your problem but even if it doesn’t, it will be there to help protect the new or rebuilt trans after the repair.

              Just a thought.

If the fluid is black I suspect that the trans cooler is plugged with debris. I have replaced a few transmissions on chevy vans like that. With the mileage you have on it you have done well.

If you replace the trans install a external cooler. It`s cheaper than replacing the radiator where the cooler is located.

got it into the shop on friday. low voltage to the trans via ign switch. torque converter is fried, and possibly looking to have a new trans put in it. they wont tell me why, they like to keep things in lamens terms, i think im getting screwed. i really dont trust anyone but myself to fix things anymore after i got burned on my 300zx.since other people do read this ill give you the outcome after i know more from the dealership.
