Car: 2007 Toyota Yaris S Sedam
      Miles: 86xxx
Brake setup: front disc, rear drums

Condition of shoes: Plenty of material left
Background: Just bought the car last week. I noticed squeeking after I drove a while. When I jacked up the rear and spin the tires, they were hard to move. This is because of the drum being locked. Hub moves freely.

Problem: I adjusted the star wheel, minor rubbing when I spin with the drum on. Perfect. When I set the hand brake again and release, it instantly became very hard to spin again… Seems that the parking lever in the drum assembly is not release well.

I checked the tension inside the car when I removed the center console, it has enough slack in the cables.

How freely are the parking brake lever on the brake pads suppose to move? Very smooth?

The parking brake needs to release the rear shoes completely. check the cable tension.
When you pick up on the e-brake on the 6-7th click the brake should hold the car. you
may need to clean the e-brake assembly at the drums

+1 it may be that you also need to clean the brake assemblies but I would also check the parking brake cables it’s possible that one or both may be sticking, if that’s the case it won’t fully release.

One last thing to try is to back off your adjustment,

Thank you college man and Eric for replying. I just got a chance to look at the car today. Cleaning the assembly definitely helps, even though it looked pretty clean. So far no sticking yet.

The one thing I found dissapointing about the Yaris is that it doesn’t have a dedicated parking lever return spring in the assembly. It only relies on the parking brake cable spring, which is quite weak…

Thanks again guys for the replies!
